My baby jumping spider is usually very active but is a nervous belly. He made. Thick nest in this hide and has been there for 3 days. He hasn’t come out and I’m worried. I’m a new spooder mom and I’m nervous I did something wrong. He has a hanging water feature in this enclosure (doesn’t drip so he’s safe) and have been giving him 3-5 fruit flies every three days. He’s super tiny so I do t think he’s ready for anything bigger. Is he’s dieing? Molting?

We have young P regius slings, and they often hang out in the little web pockets they have made for extended periods. This in itself isn’t reason for concern. It could be premolt or a spider doing it’s spider things.

I have anxiety and I worry but I’m also just starting out and don’t want to mess up. When do you think is too long and I should start to worry?

Because we were at one point dealing with an entire sac someone sent us of P regius slings I’m not sure I really kept up with most of them thoroughly enough to say when you should worry. I will say we lost a large number from that sac, generally speaking, and when we did lose them they didn’t seem to die in their webbing, but rather out in the open. It’s also possible it might be coming out when you’re not watching too. How large is this sling you have?

Hello! There’s a very good chance your jumper could be in premolt. They will thicken their web hammock and close it off and could be in there for multiple days, maybe even a week before molting. I would just make sure that the enclosure isn’t too dry as it can make it harder for them to molt. Just a quick spritz of water can give the spider enough moisture to help it molt. I would just let it be and not move or disrupt the enclosure. A spider in premolt is just a waiting game, as stressful as it can be for you it’s important to just wait and not disturb.
