Hi all, I really hope I can gain some insight to this spider. I live in the south of UK, I'm 26 and have always been scared of spiders until recently. I have been holding small ones and watching large ones up close; they're amazing creatures. Unfortunately, the large one that has found a home in my bathroom 2 weeks ago has decided to molt yesterday as it was hot and humid. I know not to disturb them in this state, shall I wait for him/her to come out of the silk web? (Currently sat in, photo attached with molt) I'm concerned it must be hungry and want something to eat once they have regained strength.
I have attached as many photos videos as I could get of it sorry the quality isn't better. Ideally i would like to look after it until if they do well in captivity upon identifying the species.

Thanks in advance!

Hi and welcome 😊
I can't tell what kind of spider we are there isn't enough detail and I am old lol πŸ˜† but just leave them alone they will come out once they are ready . Although can I suggest once they do you put them in a different room maybe your kitchen ? Just because that spood is struggling with those tiles I would be worried about them falling and hurting themselves.
But once your little friend does come out you can try offering some spood food , it's upto you what you use but I suggest mealworms rather then something like a cricket or roach . If your friend makes webs you may also be able to try flies, sounds gross but they will get caught in the web and are less likely to cause problems if one escapes. You can buy them as the cocoons and they just hatch out , most online spider/reptile shops sell them now I think you can get them on ebay too same as the mealworms.
But your spidey friend knows what they are doing and will be out in a few days 😊 If you have more questions or I missed anything just ask πŸ™‚

Thank you! I have caught house flies before to put on webs I was going to do something similar 🀣 they're off the tiles now and hidden to high to reach so just a waiting game. Do you know if I'm able to take the molt away now?

If the spider isn't touching it you can take it 😊, true spiders harden much faster then t's your friend is probably half way done by now. A few days time your friend will come out with a gorgeous new outfit 😊
Catching house flys would work if they are a free range wild spood it's what they would eat anyway especially if they are a webber, be careful though you never know what those flys have been in. You will need to catch alot too, your friend looks rather bulky so will need more then 1 fly.
It's np, any time 😊 I love our native spiders, and i will always help someone trying to make their lives better πŸ˜‰
If you can try and get a better pic once they come out we maybe able to find out exactly what your little friend is 😊 i am leaning towards Tegenaria/Eratigena or if your really lucky because your down south could be segestria πŸ₯° , just tag on to this if you can get one or have any more questions.

Without question that's an R C spider. Really Cute. They're also quite dangerous as they have been known to make you giggle when brushing your teeth.
Go ahead and shoot me. Unapologetically yours......

I just had a rather long conversation with an RC where I attempted to find out what it was doing. It appeared, appears to be determined to incorporate my hi-rez graphics mouse into the architecture of it's home and won't take no or buzz off as a hint. Stalemate. Looks like we have some things to work out. Until then my GIMP efforts are on hold.

the legs make me think it's a Segestriid
It was the shape of the web and darkness of the spood that made me think Sugestera florentina 😊. Thinking penultimate male probably mature now, it's getting to that time of year. Very lucky if they are. Absolutely stunning spiders πŸ₯°

Hey thank you so much for your advice unfortunately he hasn't come out and seemed to shy away more when I put a live fly in his web. Do you think it's worth trying to move him into a small vivarium if so is there anything you can suggest as a substrate? I'm a bit worried he hasn't eaten in a long time! Many thanks! Ciara

If he has matured he may take a while to come out and eat and he may not eat at all , mature males only have 1 thing on their mind n it isn't food but if you want to make him a viv up that's fine πŸ™‚ if he does turn out to be a mature male you will have to release him again to find his gf though not fair to stop his lifes mission.
He is an outdoor spider so you can use sub out your garden if you wanted too as long as you know there's no chemicals been used he should be fine, but if you want to go the bought route just incase I suggest getting some coco fiber on line, I get mine on amazon.

Try not to worry about the eating, all spiders/t s don't eat like other animals one feed a week will do most and I have had spiders and t's that have refused food for months , I have a jumping spider that been refusing food about 3 months now and I have had an aphonopelma chalcodes refusing food for 15 months before she moulted and ate so its not a big thing for them to refuse food, plus as I said if he has matured he may not eat again.
Alot of males do this I have a Eresus walckenaeri mature male doing this as we speak he matured 3 weeks ago but runs from food won't touch anything I offer, but it's normal. Some males eat some won't.
