I just got crickets to try and want to make sure that their setup is good enough to have them last. I don’t plan on breeding them but I want to make sure they don’t all die the next day. (I only have 3 tarantulas)

I put paper towels in the bottom for easy cleaning.

i also seperate food items. I keep dry things like powered oats away from the moist vegetables.

i put egg crates on top of each other and use one flat part of the egg crates, on the bottom. That way it is easy to remove the frass.

i only feed cucumbers, carrots and oats so far. I want to start giving some cat/dog food, organic. But there is so much weird ingredients in there. I still don’t know how that affects tarantulas, or not.

i want to try breeding them too. But i will need heat source and more tanks for that. I will have to at some point. I don’t like buying crickets all the time.

i think what they eat affects the smell, and how often you clean. Mine don’t really smell.

They eat same stuff dubia do , mostly. Crickets. like potatoes more. Try checking care sheets and search this site .

better question is how the cricket farms can keep them so happy and healthy but we can’t and they die easy in captivity?
like potatoes more.

They use lab made feeds. I saw that video in some thread of that girl who farms crickets and makes it look so easy.

she gets this super concocted lab feed. And obviously, has controled settings.

i sais a million times, i would do roaches.
they arent legal here. Just discoid and surinam. And maybe australians. But i ain’t trying to get some rare collection going in.

just wish i could do both. Crickets and dubia.

i am very curious about what we feed crickets, and the impact on tarantula impaction.

lab made food, hard to copy that.
discoid are still good just breeds slower than Dubai. Or so I think they do not 100% sure on that. I think they’re about the same size.

I don’t see many americans talking about discoids even if they can get them. They breed Dubia. I would have to shell out over 160$ For 100 roaches. 45$ for less then 20. These are CAD dollars.

for the lab made food, we just need to know the ingredients. Oats? Wheat? Chicken meal? Then we just eyeball it. Until these things turn to gold. I am trying to find out. I am researching. To. Many. Things. At. Once.

unless you live in Florida Dubai are significantly cheaper. discoids are 3-10x more expensive or more .
I looked into them but i simply couldn’t afford discoids as a second species I don’t have a job or income right now. So I got orange head roaches instead. Maybe they will become common in Canada eventually? But the supply is way lower than demand even in the USA.

I think homes are too much a hospitable place. They need to be established. Or someone needs to spend a lot of time knocking doors to get it legalized. Discoids are present now in the market. Just not long enough for it to be affordable. Its too niche of a demand.

Dubia have been illegal since before I watched feeding videos on YouTube seeing users in Canada complain. Yeah now it’s been almost 20 years since then, no one has done anything?
Apparently, reptile and exotic pet keepers can’t do anything because the governments too totalitarian. Against invasive species. Which this one cannot survive in the wild 🤪.
