ok i was remodeling my cobalts tank when i came across a small hard web ball. im not sure if it is an egg sack so i want some of your opinions. describe an eggsack to me and ill see if it matches the description. also what should i do with it? the cobalt wasnt guarding it. she is in her burrow and the sack was in the little half log that she never uses. thanks

well, how big around is the ball? if it's only a few cent. then it's prolly a food bollus...

its about half an inch, maybe a little less

yeah... that's not an eggsack, so don't worry about it... just pull it out and toss it... or you can disect it if you really want to...

It could still be an egg sac, but not a viable one. I've had T's make egg sacs that were infertile for one reason or another, or that just desicated due to the conditions in the tank being too dry. Either way, they wind up being a small webbed rock. I can't comment on the size of an H. lividum egg sac because I haven't had one yet and I don't know the size of your T. A smaller female of a certain species could make a smaller sac and as it drys out, it will become even smaller yet.

On the upside, it could mean you definitely have a female. On the downside, it may not mean anything.

On a side note, I don't recall finding a bolus wrapped in webbing ever. Not to say it can't happen, but I don't ever recall recovering one.

All food boluses are covered in web, cause T's wrap the prey in it before it starts eatting. You know, the tarantula waltz thing?
I think, by the time its done sucking out all the juice, the web is indistenguishable.

BTW, don't see you as much lately. Been busy upholding the law or what?

Yeah, I knew there was webbing on it, but you can see that it is a bolus. As opposed to an egg sac that you have to cut or tear open to see the contents. Have you ever seen a bolus wrapped in that much webbing? Of course I may have misunderstood Eper-ani's description, but I was thinking more along the lines of egg sac type wrapping.

As for my absence, I was hiking in New Mexcio for about a week and before that I've been heavily involved in domestic issues. I seem to lurk more than I used to simply because there are so many posts with which to keep up. Thanks for missing me though.
