My Chihuahua got skunked today. I couldnt smell it at first because I am sick, but now, WOW its killing me. What do I do? Ive never had this happen before. Does tomato sauce actually work?
Ok, I read about one with baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. But it comes with a recommendation that I wear gloves when applying it. My dog has very sensitive skin (shes a Chihuahua after all) and Im afraid that will hurt her. I feel so bad for her, her eyes are watering like crazy.
You won't believe this but the best thing is vinegar and water douche. Take the dog outside, spray if down with the douche and let it dry, it gets rid of most of the smell, the rest has to fade. We did this last summer for my pit bull and it works.
Most of the over the counter remedies for skunk smells dont work.. including the much lauded Natures Miracle. It might mask it for a bit, but as soon as your dog gets wet the smell is back and nauseating!! I actually use a combo of baby bath, tomato JUICE not sauce, and then of course they get fabrezed!!
I would like to point out that this is the first time I've ever seen the word 'douche' not used as an insult...just a fun fact.
Man...I can't imagine being sprayed by a skunk. The only experience I had with one is when one sprayed my car right before I hit it. I don't think your dog would appreciate going through a car wash.
As I sit here looking at my Afghan in a full coat, the thought of peroxide and dawn makes me want to faint!! Whatever you decide to do.. just make sure you spot test your pooch to make sure shes/ hes not allergic to whatever you are going to put on her/him !!
When we got our Jack Russel, unbeknown to us as he was dry - he had been skunked not all that long ago. Every time he got wet - that was all we could smell! I took him to the vet and he gave us a shampoo called "Skunk Off" - it was about 9.00 for the bottle (good for many baths) and it works. However, you will still notice a faint skunk odour when the dog gets wet until he/she has had several baths and after normal dissipation from time.
you could do skunk off or you could use hydrogen peroxide i know it sounds funny but im taking organic chemistry and the molcule that causes the stink can be deactivated by the peroxide molecule my teacher has also verified this as he has used it on his dogs as well. I believe you can make a dilute solution although i dont know what the amounts would be and keep it away from the dogs eyes, mouth and mucous membranes like the nose.
Tomato juice works, but you need to do it 3 or 4 times. I don't have any experience with vinegar and water, or skunk off, but I am told they both work as well. As was stated earlier in this thread, whenever the dog gets wet for the next 6 months, he will smell like skunk. This is probably locking the barn after the horses got out, but don't let him rub his head or anything else on the carpet or furniture until you bathe him
