Hello! My first T ...

Hi there! I've been lurking and looking for info and finally decided to join the board. I recently was given a tarantula by a guy I dated - and already my relationship with her has lasted longer. Ha ha! But I am finding that I really enjoy her immensely and when I wanted to find out more to make sure she lived a long and happy life, I came here. What I do know about her is she was wild caught in Texas and she did have an egg sac about two months ago before she came to live with me. She's just a sweetheart and very friendly. So, we both wanted to say hello and thank you for all the info you've posted on here (for a newbie like me) about their care.

It looks like an aphonopelma species. Nice pet.

Not sure if the T is still on wood chips or not but that's not good to have. Get some coco fiber or something similar instead and the T will be happy and healthy.

It's not wood chips, it is the coconut stuff.

Grats on the T, and you could either try pete moss or coco fiber cause that really doesnt look like coco fiber or it could be.

I have to agree, what your T is on appears to be coconut husk if I'm not mistaken which is probably going to be pretty abrasive on your T, not to mention should he wish to burrow, she wouldn't beable to in that. Try coco fiber, the stuff that comes in a brick and you add water (they also have bags of it) peat moss is also good.

Thanks. I asked the guy who gave her to me what he used and it looked almost the same but (not knocking any guys on here) when you get a one word answer to what you put in the bottom of the cage and it is "coconut" and you are in the little critter section, well, the bag said coconut and pesticide free substrate. A newby mistake. Off to the pet store ... Sorry kman, I knew not to get wood chips because they are not good, but when I think of wood chips, I think of what you put down in your yard and these were not the huge "wood chips" based on my learning curve. Oops! It will be remedied immediately!
