I have a couple aphonopelma. They're not very impressive, though.

A. moderatum: 20240615_001128.jpg
And an adorable A. Seemanni, although I forget it counts as Aphonopelma. 20240718_210942.jpg

I’ve noticed over the years lol. Thank you tho! I’m hoping to get a new camera here soon to take real nice close ups of Aphonopelmas and do a little documentary of all mine from sling to adult.

I currently have 33 specimens representing 11 species of Aphonopelma. Admittedly, I never really had any interest in them when I started my journey in the hobby. My opinion of them slowly changed over the years, but I never really took the plunge. Finally, due to a series of unfortunate, yet serendipitous circumstances, I ended up with an opportunity to invest in several breeding groups and pulled the trigger.

So far, I have to say one of my favorites has been Aphonopelma sp Dragoons, an undescribed dwarf species from the Dragoon Mountain Range in AZ.

They have this metallic silvery sheen over their entire body with some vibrant guard hairs that outline their legs and abdomen.

When I say dwarf, I mean it. This is a mature female in the process of excavating a burrow to lay an eggsack (only a partial success that time, but I'll hopefully have another few chances over the next couple of years).

Hello and welcome to the forums !

I currently don't have any Aphonopelma in my collection, but standard ones such as chalcodes, hentzi, anax... or even moderatum if I ever get the chance to own one, would be my picks. Nothing wrong with bicoloratum, but since I already have a Brachypelma boehmei and they look similar coloration-wise, I'm less inclined to go with that one.

What species is yours ? Looks like either hentzi or anax... or is it another species that resembles those two ?

Enjoy the forums !

Edit : Oops, that's what I get for reading too fast ! A. armada, huh ? A very beautiful spider in its own right, like the majority of the less striking North American Aphonopelmas.

I love Moderatums! I got a female and a tiny tiny sling. See I’ve always like the bicoloratum over the boehmei but yeah I totally agree, if you have one you don’t really need the other lol. I’ve always favored my Aphonos vs my brachys. Yup she’s a beautiful armada! Pictures don’t really do her justice. In person her colors as so metallic/metal looking it’s insane!

Thank you for sharing this info!! I’m gonna be getting a female juvenile this coming weekend and don’t hardly ever see anything on them. I have a few dwarfs but not this one. Yet! She looks absolutely beautiful, what’s her temperament like? I’ve heard they can be quite feisty little buggers. I know my A dwarfs LOVE to dig and rearrange their enclosure.

They can be quite the characters lol. Never really had them kick at me, but they can be fairly defensive for an Aphonopelma.

Sadly you are in Scotland, I have a freshly MM. She's an absolute STUNNER!

my avatar is an aphonopelma (steindachneri)
I have 2 MF A. steindachneri (hopefully both gravid right now) 1 most likely F sub adult steindachneri, a MF chalcodes, a MM A. bicoloratum. and an unsexed juvenile moderatum.
Will most likely have a Gabelli in Jan as well as a breeding pair of A. anax.
Most pics are my first female, last photo is my subadult when she was smaller

Aphonopelma sp. “some tiny little dwarf that was sold to me as a geniculata”
She’s a fierce hunter

One of my favorite genus as well.

My most recent acquisition is a 2.5 inch confirmed female Aphonopelma moderatum. Only have the two photos when first rehousing after receiving as she sealed her burrow in the evening.

I'm a huge fan of these too, just not their growth rate.

Currently I am looking for Aphonopelma moorae but they are near impossible to find.

there are breeders / keepers out here that have them. They are pricey and $300 for a half inch sling just isn't singing to me
