I am new here, and well I will be getting my first Tarantula soon. I for some reason have a high fascination with them since I am actually afraid of spiders. But I want to overcome my fear! After watching many videos on youtube of RobC Jon3800, Haploking, and Moose9900 for months. I decided that I wanted a T. I have kept snakes all my life. Usually loving the Arboreals like Green Tree Pythons. Nonetheless I wanted an arboreal but after careful consideration and a few months of research on many candidates as my first T. I think my first T will be an adult Brachypelma albopilosum. I plan on keeping it on either vermiculite or eco-earth coconut fiber. Haven't decided yet. I also will not be handling any T's, as I do not believe in handling venomous animals of any kind no matter how venomous. But anyways I just wanted to say that and I really think I will love getting into this hobby, and I hope it will be a pleasure getting to know all of you. =D

NOTE : Anything anyone would like to add would be appreciated as well. =D

Thanks! Yeah, I have kept snakes my whole life. I sold most of them back in 08. Now I only have two Python regius morphs. =D

So I have room, time, and a little bit of money to get started into a new hobby.

Welcome! Great choice for a first T :)

Yeah that is what I am afraid of! lol

But I do like them and I plan to get more if this one works out. I really want an OBT (My favorite color is orange) I also like very aggressive animals. When it comes to exotics. So I'm kinda anxious to experience first hand how fast some of the Pterinochilus and Pokey's are.

welcome welcome

Nice choice of a first T, i'm sure that you'll be expanding your collection in no time :D If I were you, i'd vote getting an OBT first, mainly because they're essentially indestructible when it comes to a setup, their adaptability is just great. Plus they'll often be able to teach you a few bits and pieces about speed and fangs (and wanting hugs)

Welcome :D

If you decide getting an OBT I just want to warn you that they are super fast!
I just got one this weekend, and I almost lost it when I tried to put him in his new home

Whatever you read on this board about how fast they are...it's totally true :D

I thought that too, since I won't be holding any of my T's I wasn't sure if I should get a calm one or not. But I finally settled down on getting a calm one first, and getting used to it for a little while and then after watching them and their body language maybe getting a few more defensive T's

Lol, once again, I also and afraid of spiders somewhat, so that could be another reason I don't want to handle one. I don't think I especially want to hold one against my will if they choose that they want to escape or not. That is why I also disregarded a defensive fast T as my first choice.

That's a great idea :)

My first one was a G. rosea and I have learned so much just by watching her.

My little OBT already set up some webbing and I can't see the little bugger anymore. :)

I'm sure you'll be a pro in no time since having Ts is an addicting hobby. They are just so awesome, and you'll soon understand :D

I don't handle my Ts. I have a see-through cup and I used that to re-house my G. rosea a few months ago.
I also used it to check on her a few days ago when I thought she was hurt.
I was able to see her from all angles without having to hold her.
I am not afraid of holding her, but I was so afraid she was hurt I didn't want to hold her wrong :(

Welcome!!!
I agree, good first choice T! However, don't forget that just because 'most' B. albopilosums are 'docile' not all will be! :) My first T was a super calm G. pulchra, then I got an albopilosum and she's psychotic!!!:D She will attack anything!!! She especially likes to go after then stream of water when I'm filling her dish! LOL!!!

Warning: This is a very addictive hobby!!! You have been warned!!!! :D

You will love the attitude of an OBT when you get one. But like everyone said, do relax too much - they are FAST!!!!!!!!!! Like lightspeed fast!!

Welcome again! Everyone here is so nice and will answer any question you have!!!
