How do you guys heat your roach and cricket colonies?
Do you use heating pads, light bulbs, or some other method?

During the cold months of the years I use a red party light. 25 watts. It works pretty well.

I use heating pads set to med or high depending on the room temp or under tank heat mats. They are off for the summer now.

I have them on heat all-year-round, it will boost the metabolism and help get your colony started quicker. :)

alot of people use heat chord and heat mats, but then you need a thermostat. This is assuming it's a reptile heat pad or any heat chord. The heat mats intended for people dont need the thermostat most likely.

I use a 100watt exo terra bulb. I think all others suck. I like the infrareds because they keep the entire enlcosure at a constant temp. those ceramic bulbs heat stops whenever it hits anything including glass. the heat pads only heat the floor. The only problem with infrared is you have to mist more because it drys things out.

What kind of heating pad do you use?
You can use any heating pad that does not have an auto shutoff feature. Most major drug store chains have their own brand of heating pads. This have worked well for me. The only thing I would watch for is that some of them have a push button on and off switch where you push the button once for low twice for med and three times for high then push again for off. This kind of switche does not come back on after a power outage. You have to go and turn them on again.

The other kind of switch is a sliding thing where you slide the button up to the desired heat setting. These will come back on after a power outage.

This may sound trivial but if you have a lot a bug and you are not around when the power go off or you did not realize it was off then your bug will be could for some time before it is discovered. I live in area with frequent power outages so this is a concern for me in the winter.

I think it depends on conditions. I think your range would be from high seventies (pushing it) to low 90s. humidity is also just as important.
