Why does it say to not have water under the lamp? I have a ball python thx !
Could use a little more info. It being the manufacturers suggested useage? What power lamp?
Infrared lamps can easily boil water.
Am assuming you know pythons and their close friends intensely dislike direct sunlight and even a 20 watt IR lamp could cook an animal if it can't get out from under it.

I never put any heat lamps over water for the sole reason it can heat the water up dangerously (and moist heat is much more dangerous than dry heat - i.e. the heat coming off the lamp); additionally, it causes the water to evaporate much faster.

I personally have had problems with the lamp shade rusting from being over a very humid tank and having to replace it. I eventually replaced the entirely metal lampshade with one that has ceramic, but the point still stands that putting the lamp directly over water could corrode the lamp.

I suspect that another reason might be that warm water fosters bacteria more rapidly. Just a guess, but I think it makes a certain amount of sense.

I have a UTH too I was told to have both?
Ideally it's best to heat your snake with a UTH. That's what breeders do w/their rack systems. They are using Flex-watt. Snakes get warmth via belly heat for digestion purposes.

However, the only time I used both a UTH and a light bulb occurred when I lived in an apartment where it was chilly in the winter at times.

do you think those sticky heat pads you can get at a pet store would work too?
I don't like those because they are adhesive, not helpful when my snake needs to go into a larger setup. Never used them. Instead I've been using a product for about 20 years that is UL-listed. They are still working great. They raise the ambient temp in a 20 gallon long about 5 degrees, never had a problem with digestion.

Check out Beanfarm look up Ultratherm, basically it's Flex-Watt pre-made for the consumer.
