Reptiles need a temperature gradient to be able to properly maintain their bodies - the whole tank being the same temperature will not let them regulate themselves and can have serious health effects. Google tells me they need a range of between 75 and 90 in the tank...so if your whole tank is pushing 90, that's bad.

I built a 2x2x3 foot aluminium framed 1/2 inch wire cage for mine to be outside in the hotter months. It allows for great air exchange and weather. He loves it so much he calls continuously at night though, and it is LOUD.

I first ran into Tokay Geckos in 1969 in Vietnam, where we had a much worse name for them, and I can tell you from experience that a basking temp of 85F would be cooler than their normal day time high temp in the wild.

Yes mine are in a very nice and large flexarium and i have excellent air flow in my room with 3 windows and 2 powerful fans (one a ceiling fan), however the humidity still stays high in the 70's. there is also a definite heat gradient in the tank due to its size. My heat light just popped today and i dont know why, with the temp in my room i felt it was unnecessary to get another.
on a side note my male is also very loud he has 2 females hes always barking at.

But as with many animals from hot environments, they don't spend all day sitting in direct sunlight. They're nocturnal, and so their hiding places and stuff will be cooler than that. :)

thus the heat gradient in the tank because they have many hiding spots, not to mention the temp drop at night

I agree, if they were to spend their time directly on a sunny surface their temp requirements would be much higher.
I believe if you would check the weather avg daytime temps for Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City you will find the avg temps are higher than 85 year round. Arboreals hide in trees etc which would be the same as the avg temps.

But I wasn't talking about a heat gradient at all in that post, I was talking about their natural environment and how they don't live at the full daytime heat of their native land.

i know you wernt i was just stating a point that mine have hiding spots that are cooler than the rest of the tank aka heat gradient
