I just received a "curly hair" tarantula last weekend. It came with a ten gallon tank set.up. They told me it was about to molt. But it's abdomenis very small and bald. It paces all the time. I tried wax worms. To no avail.
I saw earlier post about hooks. To determine sex. Which it seems he has. Not sure about him since they didn't give any info

So what is the best way to take care. He is too small to molt? He won't eat waxworms and just paces. Only had it a week.

Do you have a picture of its setup or the spider? My T. albos have both always settled in pretty quickly after a rehouse and neither one ever gets very thin even if its been a while since eating.

Edit: disregard my first question lol. You posted the images right as I hit post.

Maybe it’s a mature male on the lookout for a mate, hence the pacing and small abdomen.

I got an adult female in molt and she hid for a month and a half then came out and refused to eat for another month and a half. She ate her first meal this week in three months.

You have a mature male, so him not eating or him being thin is normal. A mature male will barely eat or rest since they're reaching their end soon as they know they'll die soon as they will prioritize their final days on finding a mate before dying. So provide a full water dish and try to feed him whenever he will eat. And that's about as much as I can offer.

Has never used either hide. They didn't have substrate. So I added a few inches because I read they like to dig. So I guess he will just pace. I am thinking about putting a camouflage back on the tank? Or just watch him walk..

Do I take the hide out so he can walk?

He is dipping alot in the water dish. I pour some down the side to give moisture.

So just offer a cricket every so often or should he accept the wax worms. Easier to keep.

The hide probably might not be in his best interest since he's most likely out to look for a mate. As for for what to offer as food, it really doesn't matter what you use to feed him with as long as he'll eat whenever he can.

Ok. I didn't pay anything for him . I liked the set up he came in. He can walk all he wants.

Yep he just walks along side the glass trying to get out ? Would you set it up any differently?

I would just house him in a enclosure with less height, because the height of the enclosure is concerning for a potential fall risk for a terrestrial species. Also, for him to be walking around constantly non-stop is something that all mature males do because they are trying to find a mate before they die. So it is a normal thing for a mature male tarantula to constantly be restless and constantly walking around and about in search for a female.

See if you can find someone with a female for him to pair. Then if its successful they'll usually give you some slings if agreed on beforehand.

At least I didn't anything wrong when he passes on

I would add a lot more substrate especially since he’s mature now and is going to be constantly wandering and climbing. You want to add enough, so that there isn’t more than 1.5x diagonal leg span from substrate surface to lid. How it’s set up now is a death trap likely.

Should I take out the hides too?

I dont see any reason to take out a hide, no. its not going to cause any harm by having it and it might want to use it some in between wandering or it might not. Long story short I'd leave it.
