Does any one know, what the Hawian word for tarantula/spider is? If it sounds cool, and easy to pronounce I think I'll name my new B. smithi that. you look puzzled, remember in the brady bunch goes to Hawaii, and the voodoo trinket thingy, well it was a B. smithi that was crawling on peter as he slept, and scared the b'jesus outta him when he woke up..hee hee.
I'm stuck in a worm hole, when it comes to naming my T's,
my A. avic, is "Pinky Tuscadero", from happy days.
Havent found a cool enough retro name for my G. rosea, any suggestions?:D

Hawaii does not have any native tarantulas, I believe the largest spider there is an introduced Heteropoda species(huntsman spider). I am pretty sure they have a name for it, but I can not remember. If you use google.com, search for "Hawaii" and "tarantula" you may find the word they use for large spiders. I think many people there call huntsman spiders "tarantulas" because of there large size and they do not know any better.

I shall find out... I lived there for 2 years and my uncle lives there. They have HUGE cane spiders, but no tarantulas. I'll let you know when I find out.

Correct me if I'm wrong (and I know you will), but I thought that it was an Aphonopelma sp. that was used on that episode. There was this whole contest thingy at the ATS conf., and I thought that they awarded the people who said it was of Aphonopelma sp.

Or was I just not paying attention? :?

This is about as close as it gets:

Spider: ka lanalana, ka lanana, ka nananana

Web: ka hihi pûnâwelewele, ka `upena nananana, ka pûnâwelewele

And, if you like those words, ya know what the state fish is? Humuhumunukunukuapuaa!

Aloha!
