Since I shared with ya'll Raven's death, I thought I'd tell you about part 2.
After much soul searching, I decided not to pursue getting another German Shepherd for a while. I just didn't feel the timing was right to go out and interview breeders etc. and thought I'd just commit it to God and let Him take care of the details.
A couple of nights ago, Jeff and I were lying in bed watching some late night rerun and I got a call from a breeder I'd contacted a couple years ealier. She needed to take back one of her puppies as the guy to which she sold her wasn't fullfilling his side of the contract (hip exrays, training program etc) I went with her that very night to reclaim the pup. After the deed was done, she loaded the pup in my van, just handed me the papers, and told me she was sorry about Raven. I could have stroked out right on the spot.
The pup is 8 months old, wild as fire and needs tons of work, but is just awesome. I renamed her "Luna" because of the midnight run to procure her, and becuse she is my little moon child. I am in love! and she has stolen my heart. She is a lot like Raven in that she's fiery and full of herself.
I'm so blessed....just thought I'd share.

That is an awesome story.

I'm not sure I understand the part about being able to take that dog away from its owners. How do you do that legally (and safely)?

Jon,

Many breeders get their buyers to sign contracts stipulating proper care and allowing for seizure should this not be the case. As for safetly, that is a question I would also like to know about. I would assume the powers are similar to those of a repo but not to a bounty hunter.

Cheers,
Dave

Dave is right. The contract is signed in front of a notary which leaves little wiggle room if you decide not to do what you promised. The dogs I deal with are bred to be worked and if they aren't they can be really destructive, neurotic, and sometimes dangerous. So a good breeder is very careful about who he/she sells to, and usually retains a good deal of control over the animal throughout it's life.
As far as the danger, this person knew in advance we were coming and provided the papers. He had bitten off more than he could chew, and was happy to rehome her. The midnight thing wasn't because we were going in under cover of darkness :) just that his shift wasn't over till then.

....but I have taken plenty of dogs back with friends (I'm not a breeder) that weren't under such amicable circumstances....like the Malinois from a fighting Pit yard...the most memorable... a Shepherd from some crack head, and a Rottie from an abusive jerk down the street. Those we did without "official" help from the law as we didn't want the thugs knowing we were coming, but most of the time we persue normal legal action...notes from lawers etc. ya' it's like the repo man with all the thrills and chills hahahaha!!

Congratulations on your new pup. Its obvious he was meant for you.

When I purchased my Malinois I definitely had to jump through hoops. I had to fill out a 47 question questionaire, have someone come inspect my yard and sign a buy-sell contract where the breeder has first right of refusal. IMO I would never get a papered dog from a breeder that didn't care enough to go the extra step.
It just breaks my heart that people would do those things to a dog. My sweet Malinois boy is my avatar, far from a fighter, he's all lover. :)

Malinois

SG,
I LOVE Belgians. If I didn't have GSDs, I'd have a Mal or Terv... I have a lot of friends in Mals. From whom did you purchase your lovely pup? He/She is gorgeous. I wish you'd post a few pics. I'm glad you took the time to get the dog from someone who cared. Mals are not for everyone and breeders definitely need to be selective. Are you going to do Agility ? Flyball? Schutzhund? Mals are poetry in motion and there is nothing prettier than one on an agility course or going in for a bite. Great dogs!

I too love Belgians. I originally had sought out for a GSD without luck. A friend turned me onto the Belgians, after doing much research I found a local breeder, but discovered that he was breeding daughters with fathers and that greatly bothered me. I got Thorn from a wonderful breeder in OK (drove 11 hrs. straight for the little devil). We are doing agility and herding. No flyball or schutzhund. I was having trouble finding someone who works with these things. I wanted to do bite work, but THorn has such a high prey drive that I thought herding would be best. Which he is amazing to watch. And of course we do stupid doggie tricks. He jumps through the hula hoop and he can waltz =D . When he is working there is nothing more graceful or stunning.

Here is the link to the breeder I used and would definitely use again. She was wonderful. I hope this is ok to post, if not I will remove it.
