Hi everyone,
I got a new pumpkin patch T today, looks to be a juvenile. It’s in a t crib coffin mini. It seems to be webbing up nicely within an hour of rehousing; even took a meal. I just was wondering if anyone thinks I should add more substrate? It is enough substrate for the T to be safe, less than 1.5x leg length. Seems to have found a safe place under the foliage. But I know these babies like to burrow and I’d like to give it the opportunity to do so.

Here’s some pictures :)

Oh, people were saying a 4x4, as it’s only an inch big, so I felt the 3x3x6 was enough. 😅 Buutttt I’ll look into a bigger enclosure for the baby. :) Thanks~
Judge with the size of the T

Read this, plenty of good info for beginners:

Plant takes up too much space, dump it
Makes it easy for prey to hide too

One of my favorite Ts. It'll outgrow that pretty quick but for now it seems fine. You can always get the next size coffin :p

Yeah, I didn’t expect to get it at this size at first~ it’s probably going to outgrow it the next molt 😔 but I will absolutely get the medium orange coffin enclosure for it.

Never heard of them
What is perfect?
It’s the breeder I got the T from, plus he is one of the biggest reputable breeders and sellers in America. :) Super nice guy, I heard he was the first to breed a new species into the hobby recently as well. He’s been part of the hobby for years. I’ve seen Tarantula Kat gets Ts from him sometimes. I feel like I can trust his word considering he probably has raised 100s of these. 😅 I just like to hear from the community rather than immediately bother the breeders.
Of course there is no such thing as perfect, but Tom was trying to reassure the T will be able to properly thrive in the enclosure without issues. And it seems to be doing well, considering it is webbing up the foliage heavily and also found its prey fine. I more so just wanted to know if more sub should be added, which I chose to do as per suggestions, and the breeder said the size and the setup of the enclosure was perfectly fine for the T to thrive.

Here’s an updated substrate view; the T is choosing to web up and hide under the foliage, so it might not even burrow. 🤷🏻‍♀️ but I feel better about it now knowing that it had the option to burrow and/or web.

Are you really believing some randomer influencer from YouTube over people who actually keep and breed Ts?
It’s like you didn’t read everything. He’s not even a YouTuber. And he’s been keeping and breeding T’s for YEARS.

Here’s some extra info on him if you feel like actually reading this time.

Better image, thank you. This a very, very easy species to raise. I was one of the first hobbyists to own them beyond breeders/dealers, they are tough as nails. I wish all Ts were like them in many ways

How do you know this guy is one of the largest USA breeders? This person hasn't been breeding too long I think, at least not compared to the breeders I know- doesn't mean he doesn't know how to breed. There are many breeders who were the first to breed many species, some are well known, and some breeders are not- mostly because it's a handful of people who have ecommerce, the rest supply the dealers sooner or later, or they do it on the side, and not as a full time business.

As for TarantulaKat- I wouldn't use her as well as 99% of the people on stupidtube because they often have a mixture of accurate and bad informaton to outright STUPID husbandry! Considering the amount of people that will swear by whomever they watch as someone to look up to for advice it only demonstrates one thing, people are looking for entertainment and the easy way to do something. Just because someone is on youtube means absolutely NOTHING, I don't care if they have a million or more followers.

Since you mentioned TarantulaKat, I'll be quite specific about her.

She has a great interested in Ts- great
A person who clearly wants attention- could be good or bad
A person looking to monetize this hobby of hers via stupidtube etc - rarely good for the people in the hobby

I took a look at some of her videos for the first time today. What did I see?

An enthusiastic T owner- nice.

Who had quite a few terrestrials, including a HEAVY BODIED New World terrestrial in tanks that were more than 1.5x the diagonal leg span. These were permanent acrylic setups, not temporary setups. Setups that should a T climb and fall (THEY DO BOTH), will get injured, and likely will DIE. We've seen it here all the time.

I can't speak for you, but if you're someone who is sharing their knowledge to the world, you SHOULD be a model owner and know the BASICS, T101. She clearly doesn't.

So if you or anyone else cites her, it should be in reference to garbage, ie what NOT to do if you want your T to live.

Her husbandry sucks from what I've seen.

Good luck if you keep watching her and others on stupidtube. There's only one channel I can think of that is decent from what I've seen.

One guy I couldn’t stand I forgot his name he had bs roach videos were he over exaggerating stuff and lied about the price he basically got it free. He gets millions of views . He keeps his tarantulas in smaller containers like prisoners.

I never said I take husbandry information from TKat. So again, they didn’t clearly read my post, just made an assumption. Just said that she the one I saw who has gotten many healthy T’s from FangzTv. That’s all. I have also done a ton of research on him, and it seems that he’s super hands-on in the hobby, which is why I said he is one of the biggest breeders in the US. I would never and have never used a single source to research about T’s. I read and reread everything, everywhere. And I only mentioned the breeding thing because I was accused of using social media as my main source of information, which isn’t the case. I was trying to say the source I asked isn’t just any source or a “tarantula trender”, but someone who has a lot of experience with the species.

I appreciate you for taking a deeper dive and sharing your opinions. I’ve heard the same things about her from others as well, and I stick to basic husbandry suggested based on proven experience.

Yeah… I’ve heard people try to argue “your Ts actually don’t need the space you think it does.” And I’m like, what do you mean? 😭 I’ve come to learn that nobody is an expert, just can speak from experience.

I remember someone who had bad luck from that seller.

yeah it’s a shame , I know they don’t move much but I give them multiple times there legspan long and up to 1.5 x legspan tall and wide enough. You can see my pictures in my signature. The new one is what I keep now.

I've gotten a few Ts from Fangz and didn't have any issues. Good customer service.

I pointed out husbandry. I never wrote you mentioned husbandry

It's good you do research! Most who are new here, do not, and the vast majority cite some stupidtubers as their source for everything virtually. You provided interesting research.

Well, experts in terms of scientists- no very very few of those, Some of them keep Ts.

Experienced people who have been breeding for 30+ years, yes they exist, I know a few. Those people are the ones I go to when I have questions, and at times here too.

What you have to be careful of are people parroting info but have no experience, or read from the internet that a certain species is semi-arboreal or that it's "communal", They accept said info as fact because they see "everyone" on the net saying such things as if they are FACT, when in fact they are FALSE or at the very least some things have not been observed in the wild. It's merely something a group of people speculated about based on their personal observations of Ts in CAPTIVITY, not studied or even observed in the wild.

Internet "fact" trends live for more than decades because no info is deleted. I remember BEFORE I owned a T decades ago, people said "yeah Avicularia can be kept communally"-- FALSE, unless you don't give a crap if some die to cannibalism!!!! Idiots.

In the end you will see as you keep more of them and research more over time that T keeping is a lot like cooking sadly, everyone has their own way, and some chefs serve up garbage. This partly because so little is known about them, and for others they don't care honestly, they do what is convenient for them, not what is best for the animal whose life depends on them!
