Always nice to wake up and see something like this.

I've read that the scorplings are very difficult to raise? What is the exact problem in this?

nice pics, steffen.

from what i remember, early instars suffer bad molts because no one knows the conditions (i.e. humidity, etc.) in the tunnels where they grow to maturity.

there's a thread here somewhere where a guy is experimenting with a 6 or 8 foot deep tank with this species. you could try searching for it to see how far he went with his experiment. :)

yeah, tell us how it goes, I think many people in the hobby should be focusing on learning how to successfully raise these, as I dont think its good that we keep taking adults out of the wild..eventually somethings got to give....

I found the thread. Great reading.

I currently have 1 normal male and 3 normal females and 1 pallidus male. If I succed in raising some scorplings from this first female, I might consider getting into a bigger project. I simply love this species. I keep them in two 128 litres aquariums. The pallidus male is of course seperated in a smaller tank, and I'm gonna need a female for him. Sadly, Hadrurus is not as common in Denmark as in the US. Actually most of the time, availability of species, seems the exact opposite of that in the US. Three of the scorpions I got directly from the US and two of the females I just aquired last weekend on a reptile fair, from a dutch (or was it german? :p) guy.

I must admit I'm a bit exited. I love a good challenge. :)

They just keep going. They've been doing it all night and morning now.

Odd thing is, she is so fat. Is it possible she is already gravid?

I am also conducting my experiment with my H.arizonensis. I have seen my arizonensis mate all most every other day but i have not seen the sperm case on their second time to mate and so on. maybe its just their hobby to mate most of the time.

Steffen,

If your female were gravid, you'd see an entirely different range of behaviors.
Gravid females of H. arizonensis have little problem expressing to courting males that someone "beat daddy to the prize"!
Most courting males that encounter gravid females will instantly become defensive and quickly attack the female and then run like hell!
I have a paper on the courtship and mating behaviors of this species. If you're interested shoot me an "e" at:

barkscorpions@yahoo.com

And I'll send you the .pdf

Best of luck with the mating.

Great pictures, I have always wanted to see this species mating. What sort of behaviours did you see...sexual sting etc.?

The few times I looked, I didn't see any sting, so I don't know. But the male was very alert, having his tail lifted all the time. But it seemed like a calm situation, compared to some other species.

Good luck with them Steffan. I'll be looking forward to driving over the bridge once/if/when you've succeeded...:)

Btw, I also observed them 3 days in a row doing the same dance. It was during that last little bit of heat we had, after the main heat of the summer.;)

I was reading a thread a couple of weeks ago where some guy had successfully reared his arizonensis scorplings to L3/L4 by the end of the thread. I found it by typing H.arizonensis in the search option above.
A. arizonensis also seems to be quite a favourite of a lot of folks here.......Good luck again Steffan..;)

2 of ours just stopped mating today...they were going (or sitting there together sleeping or somethin') for 2-3 days!

Odd thing is, she is so fat. Is it possible she is already gravid?
The female in this pair was eating like crazy for the last few weeks too. All of the crickets we put in were quickly disappearing somewhere, but she was always in a burrow and the other two didn't seem to eat too often, so we weren't sure exactly where they'd all gone until we saw how much she'd blown up!

I guess maybe they like to fatten up and then mate right before it gets colder...?

Kazz perhaps you right.

2-3 days you say... humm, mine are still going on day 2 now. In the paper i recieved from Luc, it was mentioned that the courtship could last about 8 hours and sometimes longer....but 2-3 days... :D Think I better read that paper again.
