I found this in my backyard today,I have to destroy it cause My neighbor has a small child that plays there frequently, and i dont want her to get swarmed. Here is a pic of them coming out and about.I have always called these "yellow jackets". The nest is the hole in the left upper corner.I was chased away after this pic!

Yikes!! From the picture, the entrance would be tough to spot in that grass. Would hate to push the lawnmower over that! It's a little tough to tell from the pic, but it looks like the Eastern YJ, Vespula maculifrons.

Yellowjackets are rare over here unfortunately. I've only found one nest ever, which was later destroyed because of heavy rain.

you should just keep the lawn mower turned on over it and see grab a cup and drink a nice warm cup of wasp shake.

I have tried that before and it only took twice to figure out it gets about 60% of them, but there are ALWAYS quite a few that make it out,and lordy lordy you best be able to run fast!

Yellow Jackets are everywhere here, I must have 5 or 6 nests within 30 feet of eachother! They visit my flowers and catch alot of those armyworms for their young.

Seriously...a lawnmower and a couple cans of raid and you should be able to exterminate that thing in a few minutes...an hour tops

Aww... you could put an empty gallon of milk container over the hole and make sure they can only get inside the container and not out around the sided of the rim and then bang on it and they will fly into the gallon container... it would be cool if it worked...

That is probably the worst idea ever! LMAO.. Ignore me, I am one of those crazy people that will eventually get eaten by some giant animal cause I'm doing something crazy to try to get near it.

Ok...up date.I have poured pesticide in it.Gasoline in it.And the lawnmower and cans of raid.I just checked it and they STILL are coming in and out.I will go get a pic now and post it. Normally I would pour gas in it and burn it. I figured pesticide, and the gas would have done it!!

I should have added fire. Fire makes it all fantastic.

My camera was down!!! and on top of it,i got stung twice bombing it with gas and a match, and then poured boiling water down it at dark. Lets see what happens tommorow. Ground wasps 2, kraken 0
If they are still around,I plan on spraying a can of starting fluid in the hole(while dodging returning members!) and hitting it with a match. I will video it for the heck of it crashergs!!!!;P

Was this ever resolved? If so did you ever video tape the event?

This may not sound as fun and exciting, but pouring a little sevin dust in the hole at night should take care of your problem pretty quick.

Just do like I used to, I use to be the neighborhood exterminator when i was a little boy, just brought a super soaker watergun and a board with holes drilled in it and squirted the nest and hit the flying hornet's with the board like I was playing baseball {D
