Greenbottle Blue spiderlings

I'm trying to raise two Avicularias, one avicularia and one versicolor. One is little and won't eat and I have a bad feeling about him (the avicularia), but the versicolor seems to be doing just fine and I feel he may be approaching molt. But, since they are avicularia lings (only been through one-two molts since hatching), and I'm trying to keep hopeful here, I'm thinking about a 'back-up' ling to purchase just in case they go south after their first molts under my care. I really like the Greenbottle Blues and since I have arboreal set-ups already it would be pretty nice. I rarely see any for sale as lings though. Maybe I'm looking during a lull in breeding but wondering if there is another reason for it. I'm also wondering how hard they are to raise as lings as far as difficulty. I'd kind of like pride in raising one from it, but if my avics die in a molt and a GBB is harder to raise then I think I'll pass. Thanks!

Yeah, Green bottle blue is terrestrial, I am pretty sure Spider shoppe has slings.

GBBs in my humble opinion are one of the easiest to raise. I am raising one now. Keep it on the dry side. Mine is a good eater.
Check with some of the online dealers here like Swift's, Botar, Spidershoppe etc. I am sure one of them would have GBB slings in stock.

although the c.cyanopubescens aren't arboreal , but they would prefer their enclosure with a semi-arboreal-terrestrial setups.....

Avicularia avicularia ( guyana pinktoe) and Avicularia versicolor (Martinique tree spider) are not green bottle blues. They are aboreal. IMHO, When they are slings they do require a little more humdity and warmth. When mine were small I fed them the smallest crickets I could find and still needed to pinch the crickets heads before they would eat. Yes they will eat fresh kill.

Let me know if this helps.

greenbottle blues, or Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens, are considered terrestrial, but don't try to tell them that :). I have both mine set up with tall kritter keepers, and a cork bark slab for them to climb on. They will web everything in site, eat voraciously, and climb all over the place. They are hardy, and don't do well with too much humidity.
As always, with ANY sling, VENTILATION is the key. Make sure your Avics, especially the versicolor have plenty of ventilation, and they should do fine.

I second that! Mine would web over everything in site! But after I kept destroying the parts they weren't using, they resolved themselves to the one area of the enclosure they were in. They like it on the dry side, and on the rare occasion that I'd spray a little mist, it was on their webbing. My C. cyaneopubescens male was with three ladies before he was consumed, on a breed loan. Last I heard, one of the females was webbing herself in. So I may have some slings to offer you guys.

That would be cool if you got some slings WayneT, especially since you and I live fairly close. If you ever find out, could you shoot me a mail at ouneotyphoonss@hotmail.com ? I will probably check back here though...hope the female lays a big sack for you!

We definitely have to get some GBB mating done here in Canada (Ontario preferably ;) )...I love my little sling to death...probably one of my favs...there is an adult GBB at our Zoo (Metro Toronto Zoo)...maybe I can make them an offer :D ...good luck with your potential slings Wayne...sometimes I wish borders were simply arbitrary lines dividing some random geographic areas...wait, that's what they are...too bad they mess everything up when it comes to bringing things across them though!!!

as far as the Avicularia spp that you have right now, are they eating at all? Are their abdomens still relatively plump? I have A versi slings and when they were in smaller cups (8 oz) they ate like they were preparing for famine. Now they're in 32 oz cups since they moulted into a 1.5" legspan. They don't eat as frequently as they used to, but they're definitely still eating and staying plump.

Basically, if you're keeping it relatively humid and you have enough ventilation and they're eating at all I wouldn't worry too much about the Avic spp.. Spiders seem to have individual variations in appetite. All mine are from the same eggsac, and the seem to be keeping up w/each-other in terms of growth, but they still don't all eat the same amount.

Of course, don't let that stop you from getting another T. ;) If you want a GBB, there's no reason you can't add it to your collection. :)

Sorry to bring this back up again.

My Avic. avic is deathly skinny so I'm kind of worried about him.

Anyway though, this is probably a fairly juvenille question but I bet deep down everyone likes to know this about when they're getting a spider...when a GBB grows up, does it like the occassionaly pinkie mouse? Kelly Swift, who I got the avics from, told me the avics don't really care for mice that much...will a GBB?

I fed one of my males a pinkie once and he had to think about it before he pounced it. But he ate it alright.
