Great picture, thanks for sharing!
Thanks! Glad you liked it! I am weak on identification, but I get to see lots of spiders on the job and enjoy sharing them with people who enjoy them.Great picture, thanks for sharing!
I see a lot of them in late summer in peanut fields. Your description of how they hunt reminds me of how many references there are in the literature about them having a painful bite. I remain blissfully ignorant; I don’t handle them. The setae on those legs is an incredibly sophisticated sensory apparatus, They are able to pinpoint locate prey on the other side of a leaf or flower petal then zoom on over and glomp it. Amazing to watch them.
Try to keep things in context. Of the bites I've had from the most painful and extent of damage and long term effect.how they hunt reminds me of how many references there are in the literature about them having a painful bite

Rattler. Exponential agony. Triggered long term hypersensitivity to bee and ant stings.
Cat bite. Pasturella Multocida infection that went systemic. 2 weeks in the hospital.
Horse. Still have a hematoma like bruise 40 years later.
Dogs. The old 5 rabies shots into the lining of my stomach was memorable.
Hornets. Not wearing a shot clearing brush and disturbed a nest. Whammed 200-300 times.
Human. Nasty multiple infectors and 2 month course of antibiotics.
Goat. Got my privates.
Tokay lacerations and maybe a couple dozen others on down to a black widow bite. Pin prick. Gave me a permanent wart a year after the bite.
Lots and lots of different jobs and varying life experiences. And I'm a risk taker. Comes with the territory.Creatures, and in at least one case a human, must find you immensely irritating

Hesperus. Southern California, 1970, in a vent of a crawl space under an apartment building. Poison control advised rubbing moist baking soda on the bite area and observe watch-for symptoms for 24 hours.Which species of Latrodectus?
It wasn't as bad as the old wives tales I assume. I have a bunch of hesperus, mactans, and some hasselti. Not planning to get bit but it's good to hear testimonies in any case.Hesperus.
