Found another one today (6/14/04) She was a big un!! Not too feisty though. Pretty calm actually. I liked the way this ones "strike" pose is!

Nice finds! The second snake is a real beauty. Now I'm in the mood to go find some rattlers! I may just have to head out to Crotalus ruber territory this weekend.

ooohh..that second shot is AWEsome! love them rattlers....I'm privilaged enough to live close to one of a few areas in Canada that has them....Ontario's eastern massasauga rattlesnake. These guys are very reluctant to strike and if you approach slowly (close enough to have a good look but not close enough to touch;))they will not rattle or show any signs of aggresion. Great for taking 'flinchless' pictures! :D

Wow. I have actually never seen a rattler in person... I don't think there's any here in the urban streets of San Fran =/

Having a bluffy colubrid with that striking patterning though is what inspired me to get a western hognose. Sure they're harmless, but way cool nonetheless.

I love Hognoses!! They do look like wee Rattley snakes!! All mean and evil but without the danger!!

There have been a LOT of these rattlers out this year!! Its been a lot of fun to see so many! That big one we caught was really quite a sweetie. Didnt try to strike or even rattle much. Just makes me a bit sad to see so many by the road as so many people go out of their way just to kill them. I guess we fear what we dont understand.

Michelle, you hit the nail on the head...ignorance=fear=hate. the massasauga's up here are threatened partially due to human persecution. Educating people is a good tool for changing this trend. I have cottaged on the Bruce Peninsula since I was a kid. I remember my dad and his friends killing the rattlers and cutting off their rattles with pride....today the same people that used to kill them have learned to co exist with them and actually move them off the road when sighted. We have a recovery team (working for the parks) here that educates people through a Stewardship Guide, posters, flyers, pamphlets, fieldtrips and workshops. I'm happy to say it has made a difference in this area, atleast with the regular cottagers and residents.
The hognose up hear is also persecuted because people mistake it for a rattler. Some people even think its a cobra  The eastern milksnake, northern watersnake and eastern foxsnake are also mistaken for the massasauga. I don't get it...if you live in an area with wildlife wouldn't it make sense to learn about it?? Especially if you think its a threat.
