I just ordered two G. Aureostriatum slings from Kelly Swift for myself and my friend. This will be tarantula #2 for both of us. Anyone have any advice for me on how to keep them?

From what I've read their care is similar to G. Rosea. True?

Is it ok to keep slings in a small kritter keeper, or should I keep them in something even smaller for the the time being considering they're only 1/2" right now?

What's a good feeder bug for little slings? Flightless fruit flies, pinheads, small mealworms?

Thanks for your help guys!

Good that you dont have those yet. Now i dont get a chance to say "shouldnt you find out caresheet before getting one" :D

Do you know how to use google?
It has helped me a lot at least.
And old topics are good too.

You'll figure everything out :)

i use pin heads and waxworms to feed my slings...waxworms incase you dont know about them look like big maggots..i have feed them to freshly molted slings that lookedas if they were about to die after a molt and they have no problem eatting them since there outside shell of the worm is so soft ..and so far i have never lost a sling yet...plus waxworms dont have that ugly little head like the mealworm ...so no need to crush them before giving them to your slings...as for any other info im useless for i have not got any of those T's yet...best of luck

Well, you won't have problems with keeping aureostriata. Grammostolas are rather easy to take care of. She is in my opinion - easy to kkep.
Mine (after 7th molt) escaped and presently is in "unknown location" somewhere in my house...

I also just got a sling of this species from Kelly Swift and it's doing really well. I've been warned to keep the humidity up near a molt, because they have been known to have some trouble molting in lower humidity.

I would watch them in the kritter keepers because they can fit through the tinyest of cracks. I would just leave them in the vial they came in or maybe a small container w/very small air holes(ex:small tupperware container, small delicup with holes in the lid).I fed mine pinheads or it maybe even be able to eat 2 wk old crickets. I would start w/the pinheads first and then after settled for awhile might try the 2 wk old crickets. :)

A sling in a 40 dram vial is much easier to care for and won't come up missing (like after it has squeezed through the slots in a kritter keeper). They have less trouble finding prey, also. When the spider hits 1.5 to 2 inches leg span, move it to a kritter keeper with a hide. They are great, hardy slings and grow faster than most Grammostolas.

I actually did read a care sheet, thanks. The only one I found for Chacos was the one on Arachnopets, which didn't really contain many details. I was really looking for some additional details about the species and slings, since these will be the first slings I've kept. The other t's I've had were all acquired as adults or sub-adults.

Everyone else, thanks! I just heard from Kelly Swift and I should be recieving the Chacos on tuesday, weather permitting.

Info/caresheets I have read on any site... on any species... are scanty, conflicting and vague at best :(

Edit: This board offers more insight and applicable info from posters than any book or other source... including the T 'bible'

Oki. :)
Here's just so much threads about everything (practically) that i always try that myself before asking. And somewhere has been lately some topic about sling housing - there could be something too if you wanna check that too.

Well the chacos arrived this morning. I can't believe how tiny they are!!! I'll try and get some pics up when I have the opportunity.

I also picked up an Aphonopelma Seemani last night. I'm staring to get a strange feeling that I may soon need a bigger house!!!!

Kool! I'm expecting my chaco sling tomorrow. I'll post pix too. 3 months ago I always said I would only get one T... now I have 5, 6 from tomorrow... A bigger house would definitely help!

I'm up to to 5 now . . . Chilean Rose, Costa Rican Zebra, 2 Chaco slings & one of the infamous Orange Bitey Things. I may very well hit 10 by the end of the month- I'm planning on going to a reptile show in Pennsylvania and I'm also going to order some inexpensive slings from Swifts. I'm thinking A. Anax, A. Chalcodes, C. Fasciatum and maybe an Avilcularia of some sort. I also really want B. Smithi, Emilia or Auratum, C. Cyaneopubescens, and H. Lividium or Minax.

Glad you got your chaco slings. I'm growing three different sizes of chacos right now. They are great. My #2 just molted and is a sub-adult that needs to move up to a Kritter keeper.

Oh, you might not need a bigger house, but you definitely will need shelving. My kritter keepers are stacked five high. You show signs of heading in that direction.

To grow your collection, I'd recommend getting a number of smaller slings, but not too small. I still try not to buy anything less than .5". The slings will outgrow the 40 dram vials quickly, but while they are in them, they don't take much space. The little ones are less expensive, and it is very satisfying to watch them grow during early life since they grow so rapidly in comparison to their sub-adult years.

Well, I got myself another one. This is a Haplopelma sp., probably an H. minax. Definitely female. Pretty big actually. I've never felt nervous around spiders until I moved this one into it's new home. My heart was racing, I mean I knew the reputation of these species as psychotic little monsters and I was envisioning it racing up my arm and biting my neck 10 times. She seems to have adjusted to her new home, I don't plan on disturbing her too much. I'm going to post a review of the store where I bought her and I don't plan on being kind.

I just got mine from southern spider works. She immediately climbed to the lid of the jar cking out all possible escape routes. She is settled in now. (eating and digging)
