Oh my. I was peering at the side of the terrarium where the C. crawshayii lives. I can see webbing in the portion of the den at the bottom of the tank that abuts the wall. I can see the outline of the beast. Its been there for weeks.

I opened the lid to pour some water in the water dish. Suddenly the lump of orange dirt at the opening to the burrow exploded at me, HISSING loudly.

I guess it must have molted down there underground. The real thing was out and about. Pretty skinny, and moving very fast. I threw in 2 roaches and closed the lid! I can't wait to get home tonight, hope to see it eating!

congrats on the possible molt :)

their ability to hiss at you is half of the fun of keeping C. crawshayi. couldn't have chosen a better spider, as far as stridulation is concerned.

Very cool. I find the sound of a hissing T to be quite entertaining. Mind you, I don't purposely provoke them to do it, but when it happens, it's an awesome sound. I've gotten hissed at by my rosie, some OBTs, P. irminia, and C. darlingi. It's especially funny coming from a 1.5" OBT.

Yup, absolutely sure. She had an eggsac, so she was already pretty stressed out. She walked toward me, reared back, hissed, and struck in my general direction. She' back to her sweet old self now, though.

You got hissed at by a Rosie?
You sure?
It's not really that shocking, is it? They're known to be bi-polar. LOL.

FACT: Somewhere a psychiatrist has had long chats with a Rosie and diagnosed it Bi-polar.

...Okay, maybe it's not a fact, but still...

I'm somehow picturing a rosie laying on an over-sized couch and a doctor taking notes in a lounge chair. {D

I had no idea rosies could stridulate either.

I can't wait until my Psalmos are big enough to make sounds. I did get a half-effort threat pose from Pita (figures... ) when I was watering.
I can't decide between a P.lugardi or a C.crawshayi as my first burrowers. Hehe!

Can't believe you're having problems with your Psalmo's temperament!!! Some would call it a blessing, LOL.

Yeah, rosie's can stridulate....they can even threaten too!! It's pretty impressive when you see your so-called "Pet-Rock" act like an OBT out of the blue. The only time Charlotte has ever truly frightened me was when she "hissed" at me. Now, I've only heard her do that once (and hope never to hear that from her again), but it brought me a whole new respect for her.

Yeah... I purposely avoided the Australian hissing tarantula slings (I don't remember exactly what they are called) for sale, for a reason lol

Sounds coming from a spider would probably not be okay with me lol
