I usually go as far back anthropologically to tribes or significant sources dwelling within the major region(s) the tarantula originates from, to the best of my knowledge through researching records, and choose a name from a specific deity, "metaphysical" properties or important items associated with ceremonial use aligning with the current nature of my tarantula. Usually, I wait until the gender is confirmed to name that tarantula for... blatantly obvious reasons, unless unisex in principle, which I don't then mind appropriating unto the sling.

For example, with my P. Cambridgei, I searched through Trinidad and surrounding Carib tribe history, discovering the Arawak tribes and choosing the name "Kanaima." This refers to the "invisible or broken arrow," possessive spirit that I'll allow you the opportunity to read about here: http://www.sacred-texts.com/nam/sa/aflg/aflg18.htm

It fits all too well, really. I have yet to name my P. Murinus, B. Sabulosum slings, or the Iridopelma Hirsutism (Recife Locale) sling on its way due to my being unsure of gender... and busy scheduling screwing my ability to do so over. I just enjoy initiating the motivation to question and inform as much as possible, I suppose.

I think anything will really work for a T name. I have gotten names from characters in books, tv shows, Greek mythology and other random places.
L. violaceopes- Fox
N. chromatus- Echo
G. rosea- RCF is Melisandre, NCF is Maleficent.
E. sp red- Michonne
P. cambridgei- Artemis, because she is a hunter.
P. irminia- Eirene
And I have a bunch of Ts that are nameless because I don't know their sex.

B. albo - Pillow (from latin name 'albopilosum')
B. smithi - Rupert/ Rupee (red knees reminded me of rupert grints ginger hair)
G. pulchra - Fang
G. rosea - Spindleshanks
A. versi - Mario

The rest i cant really be bothered to name unless something cool sticks or they develop an awesome personality ;D

I usually like to name T's after gemstones, why? They resemble gemstones because they just sit there without moving and at the same time of course, being pretty:)

That's really cool! I like to give mine appropriate names for their regions as well. My P. cambridgei for example is named Calypso after the dance that originated in Trinidad. I like mythological names as well, so it's cool that Calypso is also a nymph from Greek mythology.
