I am recieving a female golden gekco (Gekko Ulikovskii) tommorrow and have a question about substrate......
Would straight peat be ok to use?? I have never had a mold/mite problem with it, and it helps to retain humidity...... I have all the cage furnishing ready, two pothos plants (washed and repotted) large water dish for humidty and some climbing branches.
Would peat moss impact in the digestive system if accidentally swallowed?
Thanks!

hmmmm, I have a gecko tank

and I have it set up with plants and peat moss. I dont know about the impaction question (sure hope not) I have not had any problems with it.
My geckos pretty much catch the crickets on the plants though...or crawling up the sticks..havent seen them get them on the ground that often.

A lot of geckos are aboreal, so I dont see it as much of an issue,
but I do want to see that this gecko is healthy.... I know it is well fed, but they have been keeping it on sand.... And we shall see how readily she has been drinking from a dish....

er, I spray the tank, and the geckos drink

from the waterdroplets that are on the sides of the tank and on the plants leaves. I have never seen them drink out of the waterdish that is on the bottom of the tank....um, I guess they would if they had no choice.
I just read that the day geckos enjoy eating babyfood such as pureed' peaches and applesauce. I have never tried this- have you? I may have to pick some up for them now and see if they like it.

I know- she has been forced to drink from a dish for three years by her former owner.... Since she has been in my care she gets sprayed once in the morning and once in the evening. But, they claimed that she would come down to drink from the dish, and she does appear to be healthy. I keep the water dish in there to up the humidity. :D
I haven't tried fruit/baby food yet, but I'll pick up a jar next time I'm at the grocery.

Just read that the goldens love mango baby food. Also read that it is a good way to end a hunger strike!
Thanks for your replies Rapunzel, sorry about the misunderstanding about the dish! This is my very first gecko, so I'm very worried about her well being, being a Gecko Newb and all! I'll get some pics of her enclosure today and post them! If she is visible I'll try to get her too!

mango babyfood?

I dont know if I have ever even seen that for sale in the store...
I havent tried babyfood yet though..even though I meant to have tried the peach kind by now-I always forget when I am at the store until it is too late.
Let me know if she eats it!

Both of mine just shed. Now they sure look good. I was beginning to think they were going to stay all dulled out.

Well, she licked banana baby food off of the glass, but not off of where I put her meal worms, so maybe she didn't find it. I'm just happy that she is finally eating. She is still stressed out from her move though. :( Hopefully she will adjust in time. She is going after the crix like crazy as well. :D
