I agree with you on girls are less "scared." Just because i think that Girls are quite like Tarantulas in a way. I have witnessed a girl make a very curious threat display very close to an OBT. She even hissed. lol ;P

I've noticed this too. Generally speaking (there are exceptions, of course) most people have an initial irrational fear of the spiders but women tend to get over it pretty quickly and fall right into being interested, even fascinated by the T's and the background info I give about each one on my "tour" of the spider room. Guys, however tend to have more irrational fear from the outset and will stubbornly refuse to let go of that fear.

Also there have been several times when i've had to caution a lady to keep her fingers out of potential biting range, get her face away from flicking range, be careful where she breathes, etc, because they often will lean in for a closer look. Guys tend to watch feedings from the doorway, ready to flee if necessary.

Now as to "why?" I have no idea.

My fiance was terrified of them when we got our first, but I eased him into it, by first showing him videos, and then demonstrating how docile T's can be.

Us chicks are generally curious creatures, too, I suppose.

Well, I'm a man, and it took me about 15 years to get over my fear of bugs! lol

Also, I teach mathematics at Ohio State. Last quarter, I had a catcher from the baseball team in class, a big burly kid, and he was like a five year old when I talked about my spiders. It was funny. He was terrified.

{D I voted for the girls cause I can't get a guy near my Herp room, yet a few female friends and my daughter go down there all the time. LOL. Guys can be such sissies. My Ex used to scream and jump on things over the tiny jumpers and a girl had to come save him from the big bad spider. LOL.

Girls are generally more dramatic and vocal when they are scared.
Guys are generally more reserved and quiet about their fears.

If I had to say it, girls are generally more scared. Most guys are nt going to jump on a chair and scream "OMG don't you DARE bring that thing near me! Kill it! Kill it!"

All I know is girls who are not afraid of spiders and in fact dig them are very hot. Us guys who like the spiders are cool. :) . I have about 40 spiders and the worst screaming Ive ever seen is from a college football buddy. guy RAN OUT OF THE ROOM SCREAMING!. Girls seem mostly curious, but I dont think many of them found it hot. Good thing it is a hobby I got into because I liked the spiders and not because I wanted to attract chics.

From my personal experience, most of the people I know who are afraid of spiders are female, I can only think of two men I know who are afraid of them.

I think it is 50/50 - some are some aren't. All depends on how you are raised. But T's are so cute with that fat furry little rears, you just want to hug them!

It's like they can't decide as to whether they want to be a spider or a mammal. :)

I have a bracelet with a spider on it. I wore it today, and most of my friends didn't freak out over it, and they were all girls. (I mean, they went OMG SPIDER at first but then got used to it)

However, the guys thought I was weird and freaky. One of them actually screamed upon seeing it.

My previous girlfriends havent minded much about staying in a room full with spiders and have been genuinely curious about them, even had my ex stare at my KB for like 30 minutes watching her munch on a cricket!

My best friend however, wont go near my room. He literally has a heart attack if I put a molt near him. I came downstairs the other day and showed him a pink toe molt [was like 2 inches lol] and he freaked out hard. Was hilarious.

I voted guys anyhow :p

I think it's an even split. Members of each sex are equally afraid, it's how that fear manifests (especially in group-settings) that are diametrically different.

The ladies are the ones who make all the faces and squeals....but will actually hold them when handed one. Only three of my friends who are guys have held one of mine, while the rest have been content admiring them from a distance. Conversely, all but a few of my lady-friends have held one or more of the specimens in my collection.

The guys practically volunteered after seeing me get it out and holding it (either monkey see, monkey do....or compensating for something, LOL). Women are more rational, and will hold one after some prompting and demonstrating that there is nothing to fear. I've found that guys never ask to hold or see a spider, but have ALOT of questions about them (size, venom level, feeding, temperament, and anything else that's "cool"). On the other hand, I've been asked many, many times to go wrangling my spiders (or producing pics on the spot) for my female friends, and their friends, and so on.....

With the guys, they don't want to hold no wussy 3" juvie.....they want the BIG ONE (which is only a little 6" extremely docile Rosie at the moment). The ladies will hold just about anything I'm willing to put on them so long as they don't know how venomous it actually is.

If you tell a dude that the 3" P. irminia you're currently holding is way more mean and venomous than that "huge" Rosie they just held, then you are King Schiznit....and only the foolhardy Captain Testosterone types in the room will even think of copying you. However, if you do that with the girls.....then you are immediately reduced to bearing the title of "Sgt. Stupid."

People are so amusing!!!! :p

I was the one who wanted a spider. My husband thought I was joking and was against it at first. But, he saw how much I became interested in them and when I found the T that I wanted, he said it was great to see how happy and excited I was. Now, he loves her too. :)

I work with high school students and most of the boys were equally surprised and grossed out that I had one. The girls thought it was cool and seemed more interested in my explanation of their care, molting, etc. I work with a very artistic student (girl) who wants to draw my spider from the pictures I have taken.

From my experience girls seems less bothered by spiders then guys. From the guys I know there is one who can't chat to me on msn if I have a spider as a avatar there and I also know another who can't even visit due to me having tarantulas. None of the girls I know are that afraid of spiders, most don't like them, but find them somewhat fascinating from a safe distance.

girls are braver when it comes to t's because they look all fuzzy and cute, plus all the pretty colours are awesome but i think men are less scared when it comes to 'house and garden' spiders

I let my students see and interact with mine. The ones who make a big show out of not liking them are female - a socially acceptable behavior for females - but by the same token, the ones quickest to touch and handle them are also females, and by an overwhelming majority. Even the guys who are interested in them seem more inclined to just look and ask questions. It's a curious thing to watch. To be honest, most of the females are much more relaxed than I was on my first handling. My suspicion is that they base how they should feel about it by relying on their trust in me, while I had to rationalize it to myself based on my knowledge of the spider.

Hopefully within the next few years I'll be able to get a whole sac of something and have every student raise one T for a year.
