Those are so cool. I wish we had them here. I hope to get to see one in person someday. They would be neat pets.

I have to agree with you Arachnocat, these would make awesome pets!!!
Hopefully, we will get more posts on this thread and find out a little more about them. Especially from our European members who manage to get all the really neat critters:worship:

Proscopids sp

HEllo,
Proscopia luceomaculata and other are really neat grasshoppers, often mistaken with phasmids.

There is a Zoo here in the states that has a stable colony of the Giant ones from Peru.

P luceomaculata is from Ecuador, they live for like a year, males died sooner than females, they like cool, humid environments.

The females buries the egg clusters containing 20-60 eggs deep in the soil, they use their l ovopositor for that.

The eggs will hatch beetwen 6-9 months, the young look identical to the adults minus the coloration on the males.

They go through 5-6 molts for males
females 7 molts.

They eat a big variety of plants, such as pyrocantha, guava, rose, wax myrtle, bramble.

they are really fun insects to see, I hope i can find the info on the Zoo that keeps them.
regards

Thanks for the great info:clap: You seem pretty knowledgeable about these very cool grasshoppers:cool: I wonder what zoo might have a stable colony of the giants? Maybe someone else in the forum could shed some light on this matter.

I used to love catching those kinds of hoppers in Russia, they grew quite big. I had a lovely big alotment in Orel where we had cockchafers, big inch long horse flies, giant dragon flies, catterpillars and buterflies, locusts and those hoppers. It was awesome. Absolute bug keepers PARADISE in summer! :D

Absolute summer heat chasing anything that moves or makes a sound was my entire childhood!

Thanks for bringing me back folks!
