It was on National Geographic Channel and the Mekong river is enormous itself.
Abundant food supply, enormous river... I dont think the fish needs much else to get bigger.
The species numbers are dwindling, sadly. Due to over fishing and dams being built to redirect water systems for a growing population.

Sadly, this will most likely be the case for every other fish out there.
Fishery programs and new laws are being created to save these species of fish, like the Mekong Giant Catfish, from extinction.

What I meant was is it rare to find fish of those species that big, like are they bigger because they are older than the average fish you find of their species in those lakes?

They are generally found in rivers.
I hear the Mekong Catfishs' average size is around 400 lbs.

Very VERY Impressive

Those last pictures were amazing, especially the fan tail fish varieties and the healthy fish living without a tail.

Id be interested to see the back of that fish without the tail. It didnt mention if it had healed over, and from the looks of it probly lost it recently, possibly while they were reeling it in.

Unfortunately the Alberta border is all the way across the province from me. I live near Vancouver, so it would be a very long trip. But I will keep that in mind, it sounds great!

I usually go up near 100 Mile House, up north. There is great fishing up that way. But no Northern Pike, I would love to catch one of those! Our Lake Trout get almost as big though.
