I have finally come across a giant egyptian camel spider this year, and I was very excited to get to try out that new Zoo Med excavator sand with her.

I setup a 10 gallon tank with a 4-6" thick layer of it, and made a bunch of hills and valleys. Once it was dry I put the solifugid in and it started digging right away.

It has recnetly been sealing itself in it's burrows though and then I dont see it for days. I opened the burrows back up a couple times to introduce food, and it comes out and eats without a problem. Then she goes back in and starts digging again, and seals it back up, lol.

I know they are burrowers but I've kept them before and I have never seen one completly seal itself in like this. Has anyone else come accross this behavior?

Also, this thing is docile. I dont think i would consider handling it but compared to the last ones I have kept this thing is really laid back. It eats without issue and it looks very healthy, but it shows no aggression towards me or the spoon I taped onto a dowel to dig her out a couple times, lol.

I am pretty sure its a female, maybe its gravid? Any ideas?

This behavior may be caused by high temperatures you are running in captivity. If these sulifugids are active at nights, you should know what night temperature is peculiar in native for that arachnids. I don't think it's too high!

Actually the room is at about 70ºF at all times. I keep an A/C unit on a thermostat, otherwise the room would get very hot with all the reptiles I have and all their heat lamps/heat tape.

During the day the cage does go above 70º as I keep it on top of my reptile cages. I'll throw a thermometer in to get a daytime temp, but at night it's definitly 70º or below.
