Getting back into the hobby after hiatus

I lost most of my collection due to an apartment fire back in 2018. Hard to believe it’s been 7 years, but I’m ready to start building my collection back up now that I have a new T room set up.

For my first order I’m thinking of getting around 5-6 slings (and hopefully a freebie!). Since I have some old experience to dust off, I want to keep it maybe between beginner-intermediate level maybe for this first order to ease back into the hobby before getting moisture dependent, super defensive species, or old worlds again etc

I probably won’t place the order for another week or so just to make sure I’m prepared for their arrival, so assuming they’re still available this is what I’m considering. Let me know your thoughts:

  • E weijenberghi
I always wanted an E campestratus since I first heard about them. E weijenberghi is the same genus, and I see reports that care and temperament is similar. The site has both available, so I’m thinking of getting the lesser known one. If you have had both let me know which one you prefer.
  • L klugi
Pretty much same reasoning as above, but for L parahybana. I think I’m going with the L klugi, since I know L parahybana is a common freebie I’ll probably get one eventually anyway. Or maybe the L striatus. Different genus, I know, but apparently they both get huge and that’s the idea for this choice.
  • B klaasi
Gotta love the brachypelmas. I knew I wanted at least one on the list, and the klaasi is the prettiest one imo.
  • G quirogai
Gotta have a grammostola here too. My first T was an adult rosea, and my pulchripes was one of the few that survived the fire but matured into a male. I loved that boy and decided I always need a grammostola in my collection. The Chaco was the only one I regularly handled and I’m not one to handle the Ts. I hear quirogai (or pulchra) is like the black lab of Ts so we’ll put that to the test.
  • V chromatus
A lot of name changes in the hobby since I was last here. N (V?) chromatus was one I always thought was the coolest looking T I ever saw, and it’s not a bad price here so I think I’ll add this one too.
  • B horrida
I want one of these because of Tom Moran lol. He’s mentioned it quite a few times on the podcast and his care article on them say they deserve more attention. So I’ll give it a try.

I was going back and forth on the GBB, I guess one more T in the order won’t hurt

They don’t have any avics available, but I’m already planning out my next order for after these guys molt a few times lol I was thinking arboreals and dwarves for that order so definitely an avic or two. Or maybe I can convince my gf to take a trip with me to get a birthday avic :geek:

I have 4 of the mentioned. The L klugi is awesome all around. Mine is just a shredder. Not too tough to deal with but make sure that catch cup is secure.

Have you kept N tripepii before?

B horrida is a great sp. I have to agree with Tom. I think they get neglected because they resemble a true spider (maybe) thats my theory.

Well, nothing more fun than picking up some slings. Good luck to you

Welcome back! I'm doing the same and will be starting a thread like this one in the near future.

Lost my collection during a cross country move 16 years ago as a new parent and life is getting manageable enough to finally start again...

Keep us posted as you move forward...

will do! Do you have any species you’re looking forward to when you start your collection back up?
I have some favorite Genus' that I like and want to work with some different species within them. Including a few breeding projects...

I initially kept some of the classic Brachy's and then moved on to old world species. I feel like going back to my roots to start, so I have two- 2" B auratum slings arriving Saturday, and I'm going to slowly build up to a breeding group of a half dozen from different sources. I also bred and absolutely loved my P. cambridgei, This time I have a couple of P. irminia slings in that same package coming this weekend. I want to breed these as well.

My wife picked out a 3" juvenile T. albopilosum two weeks ago and it is already thriving in its new enclosure. Not the most exiting species, but they are usually out and good feeders when showing off the collection...

As of the weekend that is five to start. I also planned ahead, (shocker, I know), and already have a red runner colony taking off along with a wax worm culture almost ready to go.

It's funny that I have not kept anything on your list except the GBB, which I will also highly recommend. There are so many species out there now that it gets hard to narrow down sometimes. It will be interesting to see where we both go. I tend to lay plans for certain species and then go off on tangents...

I hear ya there  The list in my post looked completely different a few days ago and kept changing while I was shopping around.

The t albo and other pet rocks are great to have around, at least a couple of them, as ambassadors to the hobby. I thought about adding a curly hair to the list for that reason, but before the fire I got so many as freebies I gave a couple away to friends and still had 3 left in my collection o_O so I’ll probably hold out for a freebie or point at the cute fluffy T at the store when my gf is looking at birthday gifts for me lol

Beautiful little T! And prolific webber is a plus too. I’m already planning my next order for when these slings molt a couple times: arboreals and dwarves, so this little T is on the top of the list for the dwarf species now

Look like good choices I only have two of those. L klugi and V chromatus.

No Psalmopoeus? No Avicularia? I like that Lasiodora though
Second suggestion to get an avic. I guess my collection won’t be complete until I get one. Top of the list for my next order

I’ll definitely get a Psalmopeous at some point, holding off a bit though due to their speed and me being a few years out of practice. What are your favorites of the genus?

Favorite avics too? I have my eye on the A purpurea, something so awesome about a purple spider.

Man it’s my favourite genus so take your pick. I have a 3.5” female Victori, a 1/2” Cambridgei unsexed, and a 2.25” Irminia unsexed. If I had to pick though I’m pretty fond of my P. Victori she’s a beauty and pretty fiery in a fun way

Sorry to hear about the fire incident OP, glad that you're getting back into the swing of things, so to speak.

Can't really argue with your picks. B. klassi is one that's been on my wishlist ever since I saw a good picture of one. They indeed look stunning.

You absolutely cannot go wrong with a T. albo either. Their unique looks makes them stand out against the rest.

Welcome back !

Those are some gorgeous Ts! I may have to pick up a P victori eventually for the common name alone, Darth Maul has a nice ring to it

Thanks! I agree with T albo 100%. At first I had one at the top of my list and thought I wouldn’t place the order without one, but then I remembered back in the day I got so many T albos as freebies I was giving them away  So I’m holding out for an eventual freebie

do you have a preference for the Honduran or Nicaraguan form? My Honduran got a decent size, but the Nicaraguans were still juvies when the fire happened so i couldn’t make the comparison yet

Yeah they’re super cool, Psalmopoeus have really cool builds to them IMO. Love the way the front legs flare out and the proportions of the (leg:body ratio) are so striking. Lots of them have really cool patterns too.
