Is there a way i can get rid of mites on gerbils that live in the same room as my tarantula without killing the tarantula? I was using this spray before i got the tarantula but it wasn't working. How do i get rid of them?

I used to lightly sprinkle Sevin powder in the shavings of my gerbils. Worked like a treat, and there's little chance it'll be transferred to the tarantula's cage.

Otherwise, you're going to be forced to move the tarantula or the gerbil to a separate room to treat for mites.

What is that exactly?

Right now i haven't even been able to find a spray anywhere that will treat for mites and my father hates either animal being anywhere but in my room.

Sevin powder is a insecticide based on pyrethrins, if I remember correctly. Its sold in most garden sections of stores and is pretty harmless to vertebrate animals. Lots of people use it to de-flea their cats and dogs or as a mite/louse treatment for poultry. The bugs need to get it on them to work, it's not like a chemical that leaches into the air and poisons them that way.

I just sprinkled a small amount in the bedding of my gerbils and through their rooting and digging around in the bedding, they would infuse the powder through their coat and kill the mites. Any mites that fell off of them into the bedding was also killed.

And since it is a powder and restricted to the aquarium you're keeping your gerbils, the transmission to another container containing your tarantula would be minimal. Especially if you sealed up your tarantula's container to be air tight, they can survive for a few days like that since they respirate so slowly. You can also position the gerbils or the tarantula in a closed off section, like a closet or in a dresser drawer.

Yes. There is also a similar spray made from pyrethrins that's made for reptiles and is a bit easier to use on reptiles, Reptile Relief. You spray it on a cloth or the snake itself and rub it all over. You can also spray it in the cleaned out enclosure and let it dry and it'll kill the little suckers in the cracks and crevices.
