Genic eating Genic

Well, the male A. genicullata that Ultimate Instar so graciously lent me to breed with my female met his end today. I found my female eating him this morning before I went to work. When I got home from work this evening, she was super fat and still eating. I took a pic. It is actually kind of hard to tell that she is eating another spider. But I still thought that I should post.

On the brighter side, I'm pretty sure that I will get eggs out of this. The male had made several sperm webs over the past couple of months. I'm sure that at least one of the matings were successful.

hey

sorry for the lost but yeah the bright side is when life is taken new life sprouts in one way or another. an exeption to this is the population of the world too little deaths with these advances in medicine and people dying at an older age and alot of people because of the corrupt society where its cool to reproduce. any ways genics are cool. Good luck man and
have a nice day

Jon,

It's a little sad that he died but I doubt that he had much time left in any case. Plus, I knew that there was a high likelihood that the female would nail him given the large size difference and the geniculata's huge appetite. At least the female got a good meal and hopefully some added nutrition for an eggsac.

Thanks for all the updates and info that you've posted.

I am sorry to hear about yours loss, but as Karen mentioned he did not have much time in front of him... I hope your female will make this loss up with the huge eggsack. A. geniculatas are known to have big eggsack, so maybe soon you will have more than 1000 little cute T's running around... Anyway, good luck with the eggsack :)

Did you leave them alone together? I'm new to the breeding thing, and I put them together, watch the mate, then back in their own homes! Is it better to leave them alone?

Yes, I would leave them together for days. It seems that they would never mate in my presence -- except for once. And that was pretty late a night. I had read other reports about how tarantulas prefer mating in the wee hours of the day. My work schedulle doesn't allow me to be up during those prime hours. So I thought that the best way to ensure that I get some s'lings out of the whole deal would be to let them live together and hope for the best. Before I put them together, I made sure that the female was nice an plump. I didn't want her to be hungry around the male. He did make a few sperm webs in the terrarium she was in. And he made one immediately everytime that I separated them -- to try to get him to eat. But he never wanted to eat...just have sex...that is all he wanted...so he got thin...and she didn't find a thin suiter very becoming...so she ate him...:D...I'm glad I'm not a tarantula...:D

Kind of off the topic, but I was looking at the title of my thread and came up with an idea for a "new" song...

Genic will kill genic
spilling hemoglyph across the land
killing for the eggsac
something I don't understand

...

Nice rendition of Holy Wars Jon.

Sorry to hear about the male, it sucks when it happens like that, but it is somewhat expected.

aw, jon, that is the saddest picture i've ever seen...

on the other hand, i've heard that mating that ends in the male getting eaten has a better chance of producing viable eggs. good luck finding enough vials!

What about the "Krystal vs. chicken" pic from junior prom? If you've forgotten about it I'd be happy to post it. It's not really "tearjerk" sad, but it's plenty "pathetic" sad.

steve--

you are SO not allowed to go through my high school yearbooks anymore.

watch as all the "equality for chickens" group comes out of the woodwork and starts sending me death threats. and then the "equal treatment for all other poultry" group will start contacting me, wondering why i chose to use a chicken instead of a turkey or something. and then THEY'LL start sending me death threats.

if i get ONE OUTFIT ruined by a run-by chicken feathering, i am going to kick your coiffure.

jon--

i'm sad the male genic had to die...but at least it wasn't the other way around!
