a friend of mine has a male G.rosea and we were going to try and breed him with my female tonight. this is the first time that either of us has tryed breeding. we have both been doing alot of reading on the subject. most of what i have found is info about what to do after they have breed, and how to handle the egg sac. my only question right now is there anything i need to do to prepair my female for breeding or do i just put them together and let nature take its corse?

You should feed the female first so she is less likely to try and eat him. Make sure you put him into her enclosure and not directly around her, put him on the opposite end of her enclosure. You don't want to spook her into a defensive posture/attack. G.rosea's can be picky eaters I know, so if she doesn't take the food (like mine does) your just going to have to hope she doesn't get aggressive with him ;) be ready to break them up if she tries to munch him with a wooden spoon or something that is long and safe enough not to harm them. There are a ton of different ways to go about this and your probably gonna get flammed by some members for not using the search function but I don't mind answer questions cause I am online anyways :) you can PM me if you need any more specific info or a different method if that one doesn't make sence to you.

Cheers

thanks, i tryed feeding her last night but she didnt want to eat. ill try once more before we try breeding... i was going to use my 12" tongs to separate them, but i like the idea of useing a wooden spoon i think ill go that way.

The male is mature and has already produced a sperm web I assume?
yes, he has been mature for about 3 months, and yes he has produced a sperm web.

Also try having a plastic deli ready for a catch cup. There is nothing faster than a MM running for his life. Good luck.

Well then..... good luck to ya. Oh! and FYI, I would recommend picking up a copy of TKG. It will give you alot of good tips and techniques on breeding for any future projects.

The search function is a great tool! Most people are just stating that because there has been countless posts over the years with alot of great info from alot of experienced people. Personally, I have had a few questions in the time that I have been on the boards and have found the answers to almost all of them using this function. Plus IMO, I get the answers Im looking for alot faster from old threads instead of waiting for "the right people" to reply to new ones.

Sure you can get pics. If they are both willing, they wont be bothered by you lingering over them with a camera. Just be sure not to bump the enclosure, drop the camera into it, and be ready with a seperating tool and catch cup.

hehehe I found this, using the search function. :p

looking for info on
Cooling period
incubation period (6-8 weeks is what I'm hearing)

and what you guys like to feed your itty bitty slings?
I've heard of using pureed bugs, pinhead crickets with their heads pinched, and dismembered adult crickets.
I keep roaches, btw; b lateralis (Turkish roaches).

and yes, I've been using the internet, this forum, and a facebook group to gather my info.

I have a few suggestions:

-Try "shark tanking" the male. Put the male in a safe container inside the female's cage for a few days. Let them kind of get used to each other. Put a little of her web in his cage and a little of his web in her cage. Leave them alone as much as possible. Maybe they'll start drumming.
-Rather than the big wooden spoon, try something like chop sticks. You can still get in her way and separate them if necessary but maybe she won't think she's about to be squished.

That's all I did. After a few days together, I let him out of his cage and they hooked up and she showed no aggression towards him at all. Of course when he was done, he didn't hang around. I didn't get a sac, but I didn't do the cooling off period and all the stuff you need to to get them to produce.

Good Luck.

you guys are awesome; we got two visually confirmed insertions, and the female has broken her mini-hunger strike and started pigging out within about 24 hours after mating.
I'm hoping it's a good sign.

we did:
approx one month of "rainy season" by misting the female's enclosure 3x daily
one month of all-you-can-eat cricket buffet for the female (she stopped eating 3 days before mating, and started acting "weird and cranky", according to her owner)
shark tanked the male
web swap (their body language changed completely, the moment they touched each others' webs)
introduced the male on the opposite end of the tank, and let him go at his own pace

We even got footage of his drumming; very cool!
you can see the raw (and somewhat rudely commentated-- maybe NSFW) footage here:

there will be an edited version, later. :)

I'm really hoping this mating took; my male has a wonderful temperament, and the female is very even-tempered, as far as Ts go. :)
