Good afternoon, just got my first T yesterday, a G.pulchripes juvenile. Since I've introduced them to their new enclosure they've been out and about once or twice but seem to be spending the vast majority of the time in their hide. I wanted to ask if this is normal behavior or if it could be indicative of any issues? All the other environmental conditions are about right for them, temperature, humidity etc and I've left a water dish out too.

When I rehouse or put a freshly acquired T into a new container, and it immediately takes to the hide, I consider it a compliment to the chef 👌

Well they seem to be spending alot of time in their hide so I assumed that means they like it haha

Oh I just meant right temperature, humidity, amount of substrate, good enough hide etc.
But no t has specifics in there regards....temps can range from 65f-95f....humidity numbers are irrelevant, it's just a matter of keeping the substrate predominantly dry....sub amount isn't dictated by species, it's dictated by the enclosure you choose.

Searching for or maintaining such specifics is a red flag, which is why I asked....I just want to be sure you are on/stay on, the right track

Really I just meant that everything was broadly within those ranges. The depth of substrate was based on having been advised they need enough depth to burrow sufficiently and not only that but incase they climb the enclosure and fall that it's high enough to reduce the chances of being injured. This is just based on having spoken to a number of other experienced keepers and checking the sources of info I was reading was actually accurate.

I can send you a picture of the enclosure but not currently the t as they tend to come out quite late when it's a bit too dark to get a decent photo. I'll attach a few pics of the enclosure though. PXL_20250118_122021809.MP.jpg

Everything looks great.

nothing to worry about.

if you are playing with heating elements, i think i saw you post about this, make sure you do it properly and provide water and a moist corner.

If this tarantula ever turns out to be a male, it doesnt have to go in a bigger enclosure, if this is the breeder 8inchx8inch.

your enclosure setup looks pretty much like all my terrestrials. Simple and no fuss. The safest.

you can offer a bigger water bowl too with all that venting. Like a peanut butter jar lid.

how big is the tarantula?

Yep, I've put a water dish in one corner, a decent sized plastic bottlecap, which keeps that corner a bit moister. I made sure to put in plenty of susbtrate incase it goes climbing. Also I should add the heating element is on a thermostat. And yes it's an 8x8 inch.

You definitely have her in a very big enclosure then.

you could have done way smaller. Feeding might because an issue.

these tarantulas are really not defensive and easy to do maintenance around.

This is one of my almost two inch slings. Enclosure is being changed at next molt.

So far I've not had much problem with feeding, she took the cricket I put in there. Otherwise do you think the size of the enclosure is likely to be problematic welfare wise?
