G. potentosa aborted ootheca?

I found an ootheca in the food dish of my Madagascar hissers. I learned that the female hisser carries the egg all the time attach to it airing the ootheca or inside the body incubating it until live nymphs are born.

Why would my hisser abort the ootheca?
Is it possible to hatch separately?

And another question, what is the biggest hisser species?

Thank you

There are multiple reasons the roach could have aborted the ootheca. It will not hatch on its own. The biggest hisser species you can acquire is Gromphadorhina oblongonota. Hope this helps.

I thought maybe with the right humidity and temperature, you can somehow artificially incubate and hatch hisser's ootheca. I mean the Turkestan roach's (B. lateralis) ootheca is incubated outside and hatch outside, maybe with special method the hisser's ootheca might, too. No?. That cluster of eggs, of maybe 30 or more, is a significant waste :(

It is not possible with this species because the egg development is based on being in the females abdomen. You could try and jam it back in ;). Once you get a large number of females having nymphs you won't even notice it. These guys reproduce well. How many do you have?

5 pairs of adult ready for breeding and some sub juveniles.

how many months do you think before its population doubles???
i'm from the philippines so it's tropical

and also, i always find caresheets telling oak leaves is good as bedding as well as food for hissers, i wonder, in our country, oak tree doesn't thrive, what substitute can i place. is mango leaves or any other leaves(coconut leaves) ok for bedding?

If one female had nymphs you will double your population. Gestation is 2-3 months depending on husbandry and genetic factors. I have had hissers for over 20 years and have never used oak leaves. I feed them dog food and carrots in one container and use a water wicking device. I also place egg crates vertically. I have a cocofiber/composed soil/dead wood substrate about 2-3 inches deep. I also have isopods, springtails and dermestid beetles living in the substrate.

I'm under the impression that substrate is not necessary and only makes the cleaning uneasy... How do you clean your tank, how frequent? Why do you have isopods, springtails and drmstid beetles?

For many years I did not have substrate. Now I have added substrate. This allows a nice niche for the roach nymphs, isopods, springtails and dermstid beetles to live. The isopods, springtails and dermstid beetles also keep the enclosure clean. These other animals and substrate are not needed. You can go with no substrate. I just noticed my allergies were better when I have the other animals eating the roach feces, skeletons and dead roaches. It is also cool to watch the other animals. I hope this helps.

Where can I acquire isopods? Where do you get yours?

You can find them under moist rocks, moist wood and moist debris in most natural environments. I live in a desert and I still find them. I have many species I have collected this way. I was not able to acquire Porcellio dilatatus and wanted large terrestrial isopods so I bought them from

http://shop.bugsincyberspace.com/Giant-Canyon-P-dilatatus-Isopods-20-count-bic703.htm

I also bought some "dalmatians" and bright orange isopods because I think isopods are cool and you cannot get these color morphs in any natural environment.

I hope this helps.
