I was watching "Tarantula Australias King of Spiders" documentary (not bad btw) And come across this section of the video I wanted to post. It's pretty crazy how many tarantulas are caught and killed everyday for this business!

There's a lot of that here and especially in Vietnam. I don't know why people do it though because most do not like the taste (nor the concept) Although, here in China the number 8 represents blessing and a variety of other things, so eating something with 8 legs would bring 'good luck'

The cultural differences across the world are what make this world great! However, I could not bring myself to harm one of my babies under any circumstances!

I also have a copy of Rick West's Spidermania documentary where they ate Goliaths (T. Blondi/Stirmi/Apophysis "wasn't actually identified in the film") hunted by the locals in Brazil tied up and roasted on fire.

Wow interesting, I'm also from China and I've never heard anyone ate a spider for that reason... Such diverse custom we've got in our country

Seems you are from the southern part, did you get any chance to encounter a Haplopelma hainanum or H. schmidti in the wild?

Very diverse! haha Are you from the north or south?

I wish ae, I would love to take a trip to Hainan Dao to search for hainanum. I used to own schmidti (super cheap of course) and I see hainanums in every market that sells Ts lol

I remember my sister buying some skewered scorpions and tarantulas during a trip in Vietnam. Upon getting back to the hotel she asked us, 'how do i eat this again?' Lol

Well it's easy for us sitting behind our computers to condemn somebody trying to eke out a living in a third world country by killing and selling tarantulas. I know if I was in that situation I would pick my family over tarantulas.
