What insects eat fruit kitchen scraps like banana peels really well? My earthworms in my vermicompost box don't seem to like them that much, so I thought I'd get something else to turn the fruit scraps into fertilizer, lol. Roaches aren't an option, just fyi. My husband refuses to have them in the house.

If the worms don't go for it just throw it in the regular compost. Lots of things like banana peels out there.🙂

Isopods maybe. Your best bet is roaches but you can’t have those. A tip for the worms is blend it with other vegetables like a smoothie and dump it in in small amounts.

Are you sure no roaches. You could get some cool headlamps or hissers or some dubias. Or if you are in Florida, horse shoe crab roaches. All good composters that are non invasive and make good pets and feeders. Or you can get death heads or orange head roaches.

I wish i could get roaches. I love the little buggers. However, my husband has put his food down.

My SO kinda did we came to an agreement id say, after Myself and the cat on two separate occasions knocked over the colonies, and lost about 100 of them in our 1bdrm. LOL was finding dubia and hissers months later OOPs. Have fun next tenants when an adult hisser climbs out from under the stove ;):troll:

Miss them though :(

I threw some banana peel in with my mealworms for science. They have been eating it, but they're clearly finding it hard going. I suspect nothing is going to eat the peel quickly unless it's broken up first, simply because it's pretty tough.

Most pros that use vermicomposting have a tub that they throw all the food scraps in and at the end of the day, you throw the scraps in a blender and then you bury the liquid in the compost in little sections in the tub. It works super good for red wringler worms. Tons of plant eating insects will eat it but you need time and you need to soften it up first.

I honestly don't know whether to laugh or cry at this. I am very lucky to say that is something I have never experienced keeping roaches:rofl:.

It is very laughable to me!!! Laugh along or cry too, just be glad it wasn’t you! I laugh about it although she was less pleased to say the least, when she found them in a blanket or laundry😬, I always knew when one would resurface when the Ollie the Co-perpetrator would be transfixed on an object, and sure enough he’d found a youngin’ lol. Yeah I kinda shot myself in the foot with that one, cause roaches are cool, now I’m back to buying my feeders, fair compromise cause tarantulas or mantids were never part of the equation, never would be :troll: . I don’t need roach colonies, they’re just cool and convenient. Haha. Good times good times 😉
