I have been looking for fruit fly media recipes and most of the ones I could find have potato flakes in them, I was wondering if you had to put them in, or if there is an alternative to them. I am pretty new to this, so all help is appreciated, here is a spood pic for tax!:) PXL_20240609_162200017.MP.jpg

Most recipes are going to use the potato flakes as the base to get the right consistency so the maggots don't drown in the media. I found a thread of people's recipes here, you may be able to find another option in there somewhere. https://www.dendroboard.com/threads/hydei-media-mix-ideas-needed.33846/
You can also buy pre-made media powder online, may be more cost effective if you're not making it in bulk. Also big box stores sometimes have fruit flies for sale with their feeders or as "betta fish treats".

You can buy premade fruit walk media on line, I get mine from one of our on line spider shops comes in a set with the pots n wood wool or can buy it on its own. I believe ebay ect sell it too. Saves you making your own 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thanks for all the help! Also, if the potato flakes are just to get the right consistancy, could you just substitute something like extra oatmeal or even maybe some flour?

Do you grind the oatmeal into flour or use it as is? I am assuming it is instant and not the rolled kind.

I was using oatmeal for my mealworms. Did not think i could ground it in my blender but i did and now it works even better.

Blending it is so easy I make my own oat milk doing that!! I use it as is but blending it is genius for this purpose!!! I really need to make more I will try this and the flour and post pics!!! I just toss them in whole for my mealworms I’m now going to blend them too💕

If you blend more then you need, put it in the freezer or mason jars. Keeps it fresh and avoids grain mites. I do that will all my grains.

I really am so grateful u think of this kind of stuff!!! U literally just saved me time and cleaning when I’m in a rush!! Idk why but I’ll put off making cultures to the last minute. I think since it’s my least favorite not exciting thing I have to do so thank u!! And I can do this for my oatmilk also💕

I have made my own for mantis breeding that has served me well for years and requires no potato flake.

boiled sweet potato
Sugar
Rolled oats

Mash and mix together (after peeling the boiled sweet potato)

sprinkle yeast on top to prevent mold growth
