What is the preferred recipe for fruit fly media? One they can breed in and eat.

I made one years ago but had a weird reaction, created too much carbon dioxide and killed off my flies :(

thanks!

hmm i tried a homemade batch. blended banana, vinegar, applesauce, then added yeast. Seem to be doing great. The two that I didn't add yeast to had mold withing two days. Interesting stuff!

Hey Tabor, you forgot the Oatmeal in your blend it gives the blend some "Body" so it won't be too liquidy and more like a paste.

I have insect books, and one recipe is as follows:
1 L boiled water
80 g of sugar
125 g of corn starch
Cook the mix for 15 min., wait till cooler (not cold but not boiling), add 50 g of baker's yeast. Mix.
Put 2 to 3 cm (about an inch) think in the container, then plant a paper towel in the middle (like an island).
This must depend on the container, but they say 20-30 Drosophilia per container.

Note that I have never tried this.
