Frothing at the mouth???

The other night my E. olivacea was being herself (a total jerk!) and threating at me when i walked by (a normal occurrence) and this time I decided to watch her have her little fit. But as she stretched upwards in her threat pose and exposed her fangs, I noticed a bit of wet white matter at the bottom of the opening of her mouth. Automatically I laughed, thinking "lol foaming at the mouth like shes rabid haha!"
Later that day, though, I started to find myself thinking more and more about about the white gunk in her mouth... any ideas on what it might be? Cricket guts she didnt swallow, like the T version of a milk moustache? Can Ts throw up? It likely wasnt bugs bc the substance in her mouth wasn't moving around.
Any ideas folks? Sorry i dont have a pic......

That can sometimes be a sign of nematodes. Just to be safe, I’d move her to a different room to reduce any exposure to the other T’s if it is parasites.
That being said, I’ve had those symptoms happen to a T before and it was not nematodes. Could be leftover food or even poo.

Poo?! @MrsHaas you may have a seriously disturbed tarantula. You wish it were just foam. Instead your spider is eating its own excrement! Place your tarantula in a room with soft walls at once! Putting on a straight jacket will be a bit of a challenge, I think.

Unless you've a recently aquired WC tarantula it cannot be nematodes. Nematodes have to come frome somewhere (i.e. other infected tarantulas), they don't just appear out of thin air.

That said I don't really know what it may be. Yes, tarantulas can 'throw up' in a way, meaning they can regurgitate 'spit' to clean themselves with, but it's usually more clear and not whitish.

We need pictures, usually build up of anything around the mouth parts is a bad sign, without pics we can only guess.

Well it was almost identical looking to the link I sent early w a pic from a different thread that's as close to a pic I have... she's closed off her burrow and I assume will be molting soon...

I've heard theories about the possibility of transference from prey insects, but didn't you debunk that one? I seem to recall you pointing out that nematodes are host specific, but I may be mistaken.

Yes, nematodes are host specific. There's still a possibility that they may be spread by flies or gnats that may get used as a shuttle service for nematodes. But one thing remains: at the beginning there's a WC tarantula that's infected. If you haven't gotten any WC tarantulas recently there's no way the tarantula in question has nematodes.

@MrsHaas nice to see you it's been a while, and glad that it seems like your Spider is okay.

I often wonder how they end up doing some of the things they do. They do everything so slowly yet still manage to get themselves into weird situations.

It is nice to be back every once in a while. After having a kid I barely have enough time to take care of the transfer is a home let alone blog about them. I got that particular tarantula as a sling and it has never left my house. It was captive bred. And I’ve seen her threat posed before and there was nothing like that in her mouth…
