So I was in a toy store the other day and was amazed to see a stack of 4 of these square containters with African dwarf frogs in them.

When i asked the clerk what they were she said that they are a extremely low maintenance containers with bacteria in the gravel that breaks down the frog poop and the one spike of bamboo absorbs this nutrients, as well as oxygenates the water for the bacteria.

I am interested in these little frogs and wanted to know if anyone has kept them or would recommend them. I have access to a 5 gallon tank and am considering getting 4-6 frogs and some low maintenance aquatic plants. possibly a bottomfeeding fish.

Is this indeed a healthy habitat for these frogs? Any info or feedback at all would be appreciated.

Thanks a million,
Kruggar.

I have known people who keep them in the same fashion as betta fish. Small, covered containers can work and make sure the water is freshly changed no less than once a week. I have also known a lot of people who complained that it was difficult to get them to eat. Live bloodworms may help give them a moving target; the frog food pellets don't seem to always catch their attention. Sorry for the second hand info, hopefully somebody with some hands-on experience can shed more light on them for you.

From talking with people in the aquarium hobby, I would not reccomend it, the waste builds up. It's kind of hard to keep the water quality in a tank that small.

Plus, I keep 4 in a 10gal, and mine go all over the place, I wouldn't think they'd have enough room in such a small setup.

I wouldn't even reccomend keeping a betta in that setup--they need more like 5 gallons+ to be healthy/happy IMO.

I keep mine in a 20 gallon tank, with some fish. They are very active, I can't see them having enough room in those cubes (we have a store here selling them as well.) I find the pellets they are selling them with, aren't overly appealing to them, I've never had one that would eat them. Mine eat a variety of different bottom feeder tablets that I use for my loaches and catfish.

They need atleast a 10g aquarium for a group of 4 to 5(with good filtration of course). They like L x W not height. They're not the best swimmers. So treat em like a more aquatic mud turtle(i.e. no land area just more shallow water).

Water can't exceed a foot in height(imo). Try aiming for "Breeders" or long tanks instead of the "high" ones.

I've had them and they ended up going in an aquarium by themselves. Had them for 4 years which is MUCH longer than if you had kept them in that tank.

They lie about to being an ecosystem. The snails died within days, the plants started to decay, and the frogs poo made the water dirty. Far from self cleaning id say.... mine loved frozen bloodworms, blackworms, frog & tadpole bites, and frozen brine shrimp. I think they'd eat daphnia and glassworms too. They need caves to hide in they like to hunt at night.
