I found this little guy on my back porch earlier today. Anyone know what kind of snake it is? It has the nice checkerboard pattern on its underside.

Thanks in advance.

Looks like a "Prarie Kingsnake" or Lamperopeltis Caligaster Caligaster (spelling may be wrong)

No matter what species, that is a beautiful snake:clap: Is it copper and red?

The body is a nice peach-ish/copper color yes, and the red is very velvety like the red on some cornsnakes.

Yep, this snake is a Mole Kingsnake.

Looks just like the picture in the middle on the top row, on the bottom of the page.
or you can just say looks just like the link that i referred ;) :D

either way, that's a very nice looking snake. now if you have a picture of the vent, i pretty sure i can tell you if it's a male or female.

Wish you'd found this guy before the show in Concord; I've been wanting a nice-colored Mole King, but no one seems to bother with keeping these guys. They aren't as deep into "Rodney Dangerfield" territory as the Water Snakes, but most herpers tend to turn up their noses at these.

Tell you what, if i can get this guy accustomed to being in captivity i'll bring him to the Columbia show in November, and i'll give him to ya.

I don't know why people have never really taken to these, honestly. They are sweet snakes-never known one to strike or bite, and I don't think they are any more difficult to acclimatize to captivity than any other Kings. Maybe it's the smaller size or the lack of exotic-looking designer morphs in this species(aside from albino Prairie Kings, which don't look as nice as the wild-caught Mole Kings, IMO), just not sure. If he's eating f/t, though, I will be happy to take him off your hands at the Columbia show, and I definitely plan to be there with my Water Snakes!
