Found a Jumping Spider sling

I found a jumping spider sling on my ceiling last night, I think it was from the time when I raised Jumper slings, I had a lethargic baby that I thought wouldn't make it, so I just took the lid off it's enclosure and hoped that the spiders that lived in my room (Charles and Charlie) ate it before it suffered too much. How else would a baby jumper be in my room, too young to be hatched during breeding season?

I put it in a superworm cup, which is a lot of space for such a small spider! My snail's dirt came infested with fruit flys which have continued to reproduce, so I'm feeding him that.

Questions:
1. How do I keep the humidity up? The water droplets from my mister are as big as him, and might get in his lungs, so I'm not misting him at the moment
2. Should I release him in the spring? Share your thoughts!

Thanks, Oliver/Kat

I don't know. That seems cruel. I've had really really small slings. They were able to survive though. Slings can emerge from their egg sack early sometimes.

1. I understand you wanted to let nature take its place but in captivity you should see it through to the end also the spider very well wouldn’t of died. As spider come close to premolt they become less active then after a fresh molt.
2. If you mist your bottle a foot above and away from the enclosure then this should allow fine droplets to go into the enclosure. I would not worry about humidity because that often leads to spider deaths. At that age they get there water from there prey. Try pre-killing fff and leaving it in the enclosure.
3. Releasing it is probably a good idea. Can you send pick of the enclosure.

I'm really sorry for that, I didn't know much about spiders at the time, and I was told I should do that. I also wasn't allowed to have WiFi so I wouldn't have known not to do that and if I had I would have NEVER done that. I realize it was wrong.
I currently have him in a mealworm cup but I'm gonna move him to a natural planted terrarium I have, I'm also making a special lid so when I open the enclosure his sac doesn't rip. I always felt bad about that. Second one is temporary enclosure, first is terrarium that I'm still working on. IMG_20220112_175328.jpg IMG_20220112_175257.jpg

That’s ok. We all have to start somewhere. Make sure that he has adequate ventilation. If he is really little it is probably best to keep him in the mealworm cup because it will be easier to see him. It could be hard to find him in substrate. You can take out everything and just leave an empty plastic enclosure.

This is a great book if you want to dive deeper into spiders.

Thanks! I think I'll keep him in the cup for now, but add a bit if substrate and maybe a piece of bark to hide behind, from my experience slings tend to be a bit more shy (probably because they're smaller).

Would it be ok if I brought him into school? I go to a small private middle school, and my teacher says he would love to see him for a day. He would obviously be in my care the whole time (other kids have done this as well). I trust all the kids there as they are taught to be respectful of nature. Obviously if I did, I'd have to make sure the temp is ok, but other than that I don't think there are any concerns?

I wouldn’t add substrate or cork bark. From what it sounds you spider really should be in a 2 oz deli cup

or something around that size. So, because your enclosure is so big you want nothing in it until your jumper is at least 1/4 inch. If you add substrate and cork bark it will be very difficult to find your jumper.
showing your classmates these amazing arachnids is a great idea and helps show the world how interesting spiders are.

As long as the enclosure is not shaken too much. They should also never get direct sunlight.

Ok, just lemme say its kinda funny that you post this everywhere......:rofl::rofl:

Tan Jumping Spider sling
Ha! That was unintentional, but I guess when I see someone who didn’t say what species they are talking about, I start to get super curious and have to ask

Also, Platycryptus undatus doesn’t need high humidity (from experience). We have tons of them in Texas and they’re out in 100° dry weather. Maybe just a drop of water on the enclosure

NO excuse! :vomit: WiFi didn’t exist and I never did that, it was never a thought.
I said I'm sorry, ok? I made a mistake, but y'all don't need to be constantly telling me how disgusting of a person I am...

He was also one baby of THOUSANDS. I couldn't keep track of them all and it was kinda impulsive.

I'm doing that, thanks!

Whoa, I didn't say you were disgusting. You need to check yourself on that.

All I said is your WiFi reason is not a legit reason.

The point was that I couldn't do any research (even in books), because I wasn't allowed to. Also, you did the puking emoji, indicating that what I did was disgusting.

that was not mentioned in the post from which I quoted. You may have done something I consider disgusting, but I don't feel that makes you a disgusting person necessarily, it's all about context.
Have a good day!
