Has anyone ever had one of these? I'm wondering how often these are observed. I was at the pet store today and they had these large crix. They are the same domesticated crix that they usually get but the were BIG. So I picked some up. When I got home I put them in a tall plastic pail, with a vaseline band around the top to keep them in. I was feeding my Ts and I heard a fluttering, I looked towards the noise and saw a crik landing. Well I just thought it had hopped out, so I put a lid on the pail and went for the renegade crik. She quickly ran away. Nothing new, some get loose. Twice tonight I have seen this crik flying across the living room. I don't know where the flight started but I hear it fluttering and then see it moving horizontally across the room, maybe 10', then a vertical climb, in the air, before it lands on the wall. I've been trying to catch it, but it is fast. When it lands on the wall it remains still enough to get a good look at, It's a large female. If I catch it I will not be letting it reproduce, I don't want more flying crix. It must be a mutant or somethig.

I've heard of flying crickets before. They don't pop up often, but I want to see one. :(

I think only certain ones can fly...genes...I observed a female to fly for about 5 feet. But note that many crickets will lose there back wings after molting or if you grab them by accident.

Are you sure this is the same species as our feeder house cricket?

Yep.

I wonder if the males can ever fly. Doubt it. though

Do a search on acheta domesticus and you should run into something on the "cricket plagues" swarms of these house crickets..it mentions that some were able to fly.
