I use them for my crickets as well and they thrive with it. It has emilimated mold from growing in my cricket enclosure, and the smell is more tolerable for some reason as well. :? The added bonus is that crickets won't drown in it. :)

i used to use the gel water stuff for crickets, but i gave up when the pet stores jacked their prices up (they doubled in price in the course of a week), i tried to make my own out of gelatin, but it smelled awful, and crickets wouldn't eat it (i can't blame them).

I've always wondered if Jello would work?

 I think Jello might just work, Mori. What a GREAT idea. I'm gonna try it. :D Perhaps I'll figure out which flavor the crickets prefer? {D

For a cheaper alternative to the "water cubes", simply go to your local garden store and buy a product called "Soil Moist." It's the same thing as the cricket water, but a single container will last you forever! A half teaspoon of the crystals makes 16 oz of the gel.
You still have to feed them, but this is a way cheaper way to give them water.

I have spent my $6 plus on these cubes and unfortunately gave up after a week of using them. They seem to attract mites very easily and I had them all over my crickets. If anyone wants my cubes I'll ship them to you for a $1 plus shipping since they're now just sitting there and I won't use them anytime soon...I don't like them very much, but it looks like other people are having more luck than I am.

Later,

I personally dont like the stuff.
Ive just used sliced potatoes with the same effect. Sure potatoes mold easily, but what i do is place them all on one side of the container, so they can be easily removed. And for food on another corner, plenty of veggies, and bedding is wheat bran.

Doesnt cost me much, and its easy.

I have found that orange cubes and post Fruity pebbles work very well for crix.
and the occasional twinkie peice is good too.

 Junk food! Haha, you must have some happy, sweet smelling crix...

I'm a strict cricket mom, heh, I give them water gel, veggie peelings, and this cricket gutloading powder. I was looking at that soil-moist, in the store the other day. I *thought* it was similar, but I wasn't totally sure it would be safe. Now that I know it is, I'm definitely getting that. Eight bucks for a jar of solid blue water is a little ridiculous.

The trouble with Jello is that it'll melt into a liquid if you leave it
out too long. I imagine the sugar would attract unwanted ants too.

They don't only work well for crickets. I use (a type of) water gel for my mealworms and superworms and they have no problems eating it.

Yep, that is EXACTLY what happened. Not the ant part, but it liquified overnight. I cleaned out everything, but it was worth a shot. No more jello for my crickets.

Are there any hardware stores near you i.e. Lowes or Home Depot? I got mine at Lowes (I work there) and I know we have it at the store where I work. Good Luck
