I have a dog that is extremely allergic to fleas. I use Fontline on a regular basis, but the flea has to bite him to die which causes a bad skin reaction. I assume this is the reaction you are talking about? If so, I have found that bathing him with a high quality oatmeal shampoo, then using an oatmeal conditioner that I got from my vet helps him tremendously.
the ONLY product I wholeheartedly recommend for fleas is Frontline. It's completely safe and hardly any animals are allergic to it. If your dog is badly infested, I would also recommend a CAPSTAR pill. The capstar lasts for about 48 hours, and starts killing fleas within 30 minutes of taking the pill. It gives the Frontline time to be absorbed and to start working.
You will probably also need to treat your entire house with Siphotrol. If you have other pets (cats etc) you'll need to treat them too.
Maybe that is too much info LOL, but I'm assuming that your dog has a flea problem, and it's allergic to the flea bites?
As for shampoo, I also recommend an oatmeal or tea tree oil shampoo. A good quality one. You don't want to use anything that is harsh on your dog's skin, as it's already inflamed. Your vet should have a good product for you to use.
One of my dogs has some black stuff on her belly, little bites it looks like, they're all over, or they were..they're starting to go away as the fleas go away. Are these caused by fleas? :?
I know nothing of fleas, I just know that we had an infestation of cats here recently (which we believe the people down the street contributed to, and then killed them off), which brought an infestation of fleas. It's extremely hard to treat them, and keep them gone. My white dog is more at risk than my black dog, they seem to like light colored dogs. Poor baby.
could have been flea 'dirt'... excretement. Cats seem to be big flea carriers, moreso then dogs. Fleas like higher temps, and both cats and dogs run a few degrees warmer than humans. They prefer to bite cats and dogs, but will resort to biting humans, even though we are a bit 'cold' for them!
