I found these today. Someone on the forum a long time ago brought this species up when I was trying to ID another fish. They mentioned it was "in my area". I forgot who that was. Well, I found some in a stream today. Pretty cool looking. Not a fish dude but interesting enough to put in my aquarium.

They should be P. latipinna

P. velifera occurs farther South. A bigger version of these guys

Thats a nice male there. Are these from FW or brackish water?

Yea, they look allot like that. I guess I should mention that I found them in the central Tx hill country. Found them in a clear running stream. There are allot of them there. Dang, didn't see your post, dtknow. P. latipinna? I'll go check that out. There were some that were more colorful than that guy there. They pale up at night, don't they? I found them about 10 miles north of Austin Tx.

OK, thanks AB's. One more thing. The body of water I found these in is spring fed. It's where the stream starts so it never freezes there. On cold days when I drive by it, there's steam coming off of the surface. Maybe some were let lose there a long time ago. Sure is a healthy population there.

Interesting stuff. I bet these would be great fish for a pond in your climate. I don't know much about these guys but they are supposed to get biggest/most colorful in saltwater enviroments. I don't know enough about them to tell you if they could have naturally occured there. Someone may have transferred them there as bait too. Feral is possible too but mollies naturally occur in your state.

Alright. Thanks again. Going to catch some more. Put some in a rain barrel to keep mosquitos down.
