Computerized Axial Tomography. A waste of x-ray spectrum energy if not selective. To wit, look at all the Trumpohiles. Zapping their brains is like trying to find a BB in a boxcar loaded with animal manure.
Trivia. The origin of heaving a massive x-ray tube, the photoreceptor array, that framework to hold all the pieces in perfect opposite alignment, and all the wiring, well over a half ton of gadgetry spinning around, was derived from the rotational mechanisms of a battle tank turret.
I got my certification of x-ray tech with specialization in CAT technology around here someplace if I didn't happen to use it for toilet paper.

I think the sponges are keeping the gills wet? Maybe the sprayed water on it periodically?
This looks like some species of large angelfish, possibly Grey angelfish?

Yes that was an Angelfish they treated.
Aquariums do this all the time. Nothing new or crazy. They're just applying what they do for other animals to fish. The exotic and rare species get better healthcare than most Americans do.
As for the sponge gill thing, they have anesthesiologists that monitor medication and oxygen levels in the patient. If this means aerating the gills with a steady stream of oxygenated water, that's what's happening.

I suspect they thought it may have swallowed something it shouldn't have. The scan would give them the precise location to retrieve it.
From various reports I've read over the years. fish can carry a lot of junk around in their stomachs, unable to pass it through. A fisherman showed my mom an alarm clock he found in a shark. So how in heck? That would rapidly sink to the bottom. I think she said a friend of hers kept it, bought it off the fisherman.
Project of the day; write my brother and try to find an alarm clock.
