Took my son out to the river today so he could collect some rocks and drift wood. He picked up a rock and practically dove to the ground. When he stands up he has a 5 inch long red striped garter snake cupped in his hands. I was so proud of him cus last year he would freak out if he saw a snake.

Anyways we brought it home so he could show his mom the beastie. Sadly she said he couldn't keep it as a pet. After a bit of begging and pleading, he finally decided to let it go in the garden out back (tomorrow after school).

The area I live in is one of the fastest growing i the nation, which means i am having less and less good places to go snake hunting, and the snakes(and every other animal around here) are have a harder time finding out where to live. :8o . ... its sad really.

Congrats! It's always pleasing to find something, especially when you are not looking!

I would advise him to let it go where he found it, I think I read somewhere that snakes that are released away from where they are found will try to wander back, and possibly that means getting hit by a car :(

We live right next to the river and not more than say 10 minutes from where the snake was found. No road for it to cross. So it's safe as can be if it decides to "go home".
