My advice would be, research the specific species of tarantula you wish to buy. general info might result in a dead spider. Find out which species is availiable to you and research each one. Then decide on the species that suits your ability to care for it.

Some good first tarantulas to consider would be: Grammostola rosea, Brachypelma albopilosum, Brachypelma smithi, Grammostola aureostriata, Eupalaestrus campestratus, Avicularia avicularia, and Avicularia metallica. Though, of course, there are many others that would be suitable as well. In general, you want to find something that is typically docile and hardy. All of these usually are, though Avicularia species can sometimes be a little sensitive to their environment, they are usually quite docile. Find a species that you like and then you can search on this site for info or do a google search for "<insert name of species here> care sheet". I recommend buying from an online dealer (you can find dealer reviews and ads on this site) or at an invert show, as opposed to buying from a pet store. You are more likely to get what you pay for and to get a tarantula that is in good health and has been properly cared for. Let us know what species you are most interested in and I am sure we can also provide additional info on that T.

i definately 3rd the research idea. some good sites for specific information on species is: arachnopets.com which is part of this site, petbugs.com has a decent sized list, centralpets.com, or just post on here and i'm sure someone will be more than happy to lead you in the right direction. once you have one picked out, like was said before there's a part of the boards that reviews online breeders. <EDIT: No dealer recommendations!> i'm sure there are other great breeders online but i can't personally speak from experience. great choice for a pet and welcome to the boards. {D
