Not a good idea at all.

I wouldn't feed anything like that from outside to any of my spiders, you don't know what parasites and other nasty stuff they'll harbour.

I know some people use vertebrate prey including lizards (which they buy from pet shops) as a food for their spiders, but it's not something I choose to do. There is also a chance that invertebrate prey like lizards, mice etc can injure the spider. A lizard can bite, and an injury to the spider can easily lead to death. Not a risk I'd be willing to take with one of my animals.

A tarantula can get all its nutritional needs met by insect prey. Besides, where I am (in the UK) it's illegal to feed any live vertebrate to a spider. I also wouldn't feel comfortable doing it for moral reasons, but thats just my opinion.

It's one of those areas that always causes controversy in this hobby, but certainly do not feed vertebrate prey that has been caught from the wild. Whether or not you choose to feed vertebrate prey such as mice is your own decision, but consider the fact that G. rosea is not exactly a big spider compared to something like a T. blondi, is it really worth the risk to your tarantula?

If I were you I'd stick to crickets:)

This topic has been covered countless times, so let's not get into another debate about feeding vertebrate prey.

For reference and coverage of many sides to the great vertebrate feeding debate, check out this epic thread:

Moderator's note

General warning people, keep things civil. I deleted several posts that basically crossed the line and violated the rules of AB. I really don't want to have to revisit this thread to clean it up further.

It's actually a common house gecko (Hemidactylus frenatus or similar) they occur natively from the Americas all the way to south-east Asia. More importantly, ts commonly eat them in the wild. If anything, they seem to like them considerably IMO. Of course, I can only offer this type of prey item once in a long while... I mainly offer them to certain larger females I intend to breed or that would benefit significantly from such a meal.

The nutritional value (compared to any rodent) is substantially higher and easier to assimilate IMO.

But for all intents and purposes, roaches, superworms and crickets are an excellent staple.

Absolutely. Especially the easier to breed and common geckos.

thats great... coz i plan to start my 'comon-everyday-house-lizard-breeding-program' soon to support the nutritional requirements of my maturing T's...

pinkie mice get fuzzy way too fast so if i were to feed my T a vertibrate, i think a captive-bread lizard would be my first choice... i dont think everyone would agree though... :? :? :? :? :? :?
